With the rain starting to drench his shirt and bead in his hair, Jason Miller looked to his small gathering of animal rights followers last night.
"Are you guys cold?" he asked, shivering slightly from the nighttime chill or adrenaline of possible arrest.
"No, I'm hot," a woman in a pink ski outfit spit angrily, casting her eyes at the half-dozen police officers flanking the activists.
"Yeah, well, there's a lot to be hot about," Miller said.
Earlier in the day, Randy Knight, community relations manager for the Johnson County Park and Recreation Department, released details about the fate of the 300 deer that will be culled by sharpshooters over the next month to reduce the overpopulation in Shawnee Mission Park. The meat will be donated to Harvesters to feed low-income residents, while the hides will go to the Veterans Leather Program, which uses such material for fingerless gloves needed by wheelchair-bound soldiers.
But Miller was more interested in the blood.
In his latest act of defiance against the Johnson County deer "murderers," the militant vegan doused himself in animal gore.
Miller, the founder of Bite Club of KC, said his latest stunt aimed to emphasize the barbaric nature of the deer harvest. So he acquired a bucket of beef blood -- more than two gallons of the chunky stuff -- from a local meat processor. "This is for the deer," he shouted. Then he up-ended the bucket over his head.
"You go, Jason!" one supported yelled.
"God save the deer!" another shouted.
"It's utterly disgusting," Miller said, grasping for a towel and spitting the splatters that got in his mouth.
Dripping with blood, the empty bucket dangling from his hand, Miller admitted after that he nearly didn't go through with it.
"I kind of had second thoughts," he said. "But then I thought, 'Fuck it.'"

You realize a cow had to die for that blood, so really he killed a cow by proxy! And if you really care about animals so much then quit driving your car, you might run over an animal. And if you've never seen the environmental destruction around an oil well then you should take a drive to the country and check it out for yourself.
As for the compensatory rebound effect and does absorbing embryos, this only happens when the herd overpopulates and they begin to starve. Same thing happens in anorexic humans, they stop having their periods, but not until they are actually starving. And if there are less deer in unhunted areas, why are there so many deer in this park? That makes no sense. So the more we shoot the more there will be? Let's shoot them all so there will be twice as many next year.
And when you call me a bloodluster, and assume I hate animals or want to commit some cruelty on them because I hunt, you couldn't be more wrong. I love the animals I hunt and pay them the utmost respect for the sustenance they provide to me and my family, by practicing my shooting and taking only clean, high-percentage, ethical shots. The worst possible result for me would be to wound an animal.
If you hate hunters so much maybe you should think about where all the money for conservation comes from, for game and non game species alike. The money comes not from general taxes, but from hunting/ fishing licenses and tags, and special taxes on hunting and fishing gear provided in the Pittman-Robertson Act. So hunters pay for all the wildlife that you enjoy looking at. Instead of pumping money into fighting hunting, maybe you should pump money into setting aside wild lands for wildlife, and support the hunters who help manage this wildlife, at no expense to taxpayers. We aren't the enemy, most hunters are responsible, ethical, hardworking, and even educated people. Many of us buy land and plant food for wildlife at great personal expense just to improve the local wildlife, so we and our children can experience hunting and the comradery and outdoor education that comes with it. Yes, there are some bad apples in our ranks, but some AR people pay a meat processor to kill a cow so they can use it's blood to prove a point about not killing animals. Seems like a conflict of interest to me.

BOTTOM LINE: deer are extremely over populated, the population needs to be cut down. AND no part if the deer is getting wasted so there is absolutely nothing for anyone to complain about.

First, I didn't get excited at the sight of all the blood. I'm not a degenerate that loves to bathe in the blood of my supper. Secondly, those are not healthy or thriving deer. Ok, biology 101. Here we go. Pay attention please. The deer are not starving. They are thriving and healthy. If they were starving there would not be this size heard. And once the deer are slaughtered it will leave abundant food for the survivors. There is a direct corelation between healthy, well-fed deer and reproduction. The survivors will become fat and fertile and begin producing twins and triplets. It's just basic biology 101.It applies to most species. Where I live they have conducted annual killfests using the same hit man and his goons SMP is using to train your in-house blood lusters. He has been in my town for 5 years in a row. He is going to be coming back for another 5 years. Know why? It's called the compensatory rebound effect. He is expoiting nature's perfect backup system, (called the rebound effect) and laughing all the way to the bank. In non hunted areas there are far less deer. Deer reach what's called a state of homeostasis which is ...there will only be a number of deer that the environment can support. Does will even absorb an embryo to adjust the carrying capacity of the environment.Isn't nature amazing? And then our arrogant species comes along and thinks it can beat nature into submission. Come on folks, get real. This type of management is necessary in the absence of historical predators. The only other feasible option is to reintroduce mountain lions...I'm sure residents would be real stoked about that.
