'Gnarly' Dan arraigned on drug charges

In a pothead nightmare scenario, an undercover detective posing as a FedEx guy rang Dan Myers' doorbell on the Missouri side of State Line Road October 7 and handed him a package that weighed almost 2.5 pounds, according to Jackson County court documents.

Myers, 23, allegedly signed for the package -- which contained 1,050 grams of marijuana -- even though it was addressed to a Daniel Bauer. Myers allegedly took the package upstairs and put it in his closet.

When the undercover cop got back to his car, he called in the cavalry, and they quickly swarmed the house Myers rents on State Line Road. Inside, they allegedly found a jackpot of marijuana paraphernalia -- including a digital scale reportedly coated with drug residue, 51 grams of a substance identified by police as marijuana, a .22 caliber pistol with ammo and 11 glass pipes.

Upon questioning, Myers reportedly stated that he had accepted delivery of the parcel for a friend, though he wouldn't identify who.

Myers is known as "Gnarly Dan," the founder of a boutique marketing and video production company called Gnarly Enterprises that was featured in The Kansas City Star's Preview section in June.

Myers appeared in court yesterday in a jacket, vest and skinny jeans. He pleaded not guilty to the single felony and two misdemeanor charges against him: possession of a controlled substance, and two counts of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

He's due back in court at 9 a.m. on November 10.

Update 10/22: Myers appeared in court in a suit and tie, not skinny jeans as previously reported. His look was more kempt than the typical arraignment outfit, which was casual clothing or prison jumpsuits.

ahhhhhh. gotta love karma.

how many people has dan used to get to where he is? what some people on this post call "building a scene," i call "stepping on people's throats to make a name for himself."

dan's mantra has always been self-promotion. he should be psyched about this article.

@That Guy Look, I know what I wrote sounds like a conspiracy and I hope that what I wrote isn't true. The facts are though that Kansas City used police to intimidate people opposed to Power & Light to get it built. Several people have documented that. All I'm trying to point out is that if KC is willing to use force to get P&L built, they are willing to use it to make sure it stays open. Dan himself can't draw all the business away from P&L, but a group of several promoters doing the same thing as Dan can. What's a better way to try to end someone else's business, discredit them in public and hope it sticks. Look at the fight the Council had when Funkhouser nominated Stretch to the TIF Commission. Qualified or not, Stretch and the whole Crossroads area is also a threat to the P&L District.

Dan made a dumb mistake accepting the package as others have pointed out. I don't think it was random that they targeted Dan, I believe there was an agenda behind it.

Wow, I will NEVER sign for a package again. Didn't know it was that easy for the obviously bored and having nothing better to do Law Enforcement of KC to entrap you.

I agree with Dan Doty, anyone who wrote this article, or has read the article and decided to judge Gnarly Dan, and here's the kicker... NOT sinned in the eyes of the law, raise your hand...thought so. Not so smug now, are we?

It's not wrong to report of Dan getting busted. It is a matter of public record. This, however, is some catty bullshit on a website that is supposed to be a viable alternative news source? What is the matter Casey? Dan wrong you in some way, or are you just the type that hates 'hipsters' and any one doing something cool? Aren't these hipsters a major reason your newspaper/website exists? Aren't these hipsters the ones patronizing most the establishments that keep afloat a local economy?

Dan is not from some rich family, or some self important hipster, and who cares if he was? Get on your facebook, and you can make all of the condescending comments and judgements you would like. So: publish a rundown of your wardrobe, and drinking haunts, so we know that you are in NO way associated with any sort of skinny jean hipster pot smokers, OR stop being a second rate Kitty Kelley/Perez Hilton/tmz.

At least there isn't real crime in KC to report!

Posted by Andrew on 10/24/2009 at 12:45 PM

Let's call this what it really is.

First, Dan made an error in judgement and will have to be held accountable for that error.

Two, Dan works, and trust me when I say that he puts more energy into it than most people could think to be possible.

Three,"Trustfund Kid" and "Hipster Douchebag" everyone is entitled to their opinion but if you have ever spent more than 5 minutes talking to Dan you would know that those labels aren't true at all.

Lastly, Is what he did worse than half of the stuff that people replying to this post do on a weekly or daily basis? Driving drunk from Westport, serving underage friends, giving away free drinks (Stealing from your work), or doing drugs yourself.

This city has way bigger problem than busting someone that is simply trying to grind out a living. Let's work on stopping rapist and thieves terrorizing the westside and midtown area.

Dan's case looks like entrapment to me. I would also bet that City Hall is behind this. Take a look at Power & Light, empty except on weekends. This is a problem for the city which abused eminent domain laws to create P&L and also financed a large part of the project. The city wants P&L to succeed and will do anything to make sure it does. City Council recently sought to amend 3AM liquor licenses so that no 3AM bars would exist south of 19th Street, eliminating the competition by shutting down bars in Wesport, Brookside and Waldo. The city has also stepped up liquor control pressure on bar owners since P&L opened. A coalition of bar owners struck a deal with the council that still raised the requirements for a 3AM license but not to the point it put their licenses at risk. Why is this relevant? Dan promotes shows at the bars that compete with P&L and is a threat to city finances, a minor threat, but he does help draw business away from P&L. Cordish is a huge, worldwide company and it did not get that way by being nice. I believe that city officials, with a push from Cordish, leaned on the police to make a case against Dan anyway they could.

I cannot believe you, yes you, The Pitch including Casey Lyons, those who have taken the responsibility and the wages to inform your community, have let yourselves excrete such thoughtless tabloids. Though I'm not familiar with All the crap you've peddled, excuse me, tried to give away in the past, this particular piece of cheap and shallow shit doesn't deserve its place here nor on Twitter. I can only imagine you sat down to write this before breakfast while watching your TIVO recording of The Hills across the room. Whether or not you dramatize your own life, Casey, there are more important things you should be thinking about and writing on. Don't call yourself a journalist. Do some real research and inform yourself because this paper could be doing good for the society that reads it. Comedians take stabs at their own audiences, and you should give a damn. There's a lot going on out there...You need to evaluate your core objectives/values and The Pitch needs to get intelligent staff who are informing the public of The Relevant.

Whether or not you want to dramatize your existence outside your work, Casey, there are more important things that you should be thinking about and writing on with your time. I can only imagine you sat down to write this during your TIVO'd episode of The Hills. I've read some of Casey's articles, and the anti-intellectual pride she exemplifies should not be represented in The Pitch. Missouri has a huge budget problem. Rapists and murderers running free. Kansas City is cutting it's police force due to a budget shortfall. What better way to waste $50,000 or so to get 2lbs of Marijuana off the streets. A substance proven to be far less harmful than alcohol, tobacco, and 1000's of other legal substances. This is another example of poor judgment from our law enforcement officials. When will we as citizens stand up together and say ENOUGH!?? Stop wasting our tax dollars and resources enforcing the law on this failed war. The laws need to be changed. Prohibition creates crime and a very profitable black market of which is not controlled or regulated. 75 years of prohibition has contributed to decades of poverty and rising crime rates worldwide. Marijuana isn't ever going away! Once everyone realizes that fact, Kansas City and America will be a much safer and happier place.
Come join us and help us get Marijuana laws reformed. www.KCNORML.org We meet at The Westport Coffee House every other Monday.

Next time, instead of getting busted shipping with Fedex (really really dumb), wouldn't it just be cheaper to take some of that trust fund money, rent a car, and drive to wherever he's getting it from and driving it back? That's what I'd do if I were looking for felony quantities of controlled substances...
