God bless Kansas state Sen. Mary Pilcher Cook of Shawnee, who is leading the effort to secure a Kansas Health Care Freedom Amendment. Cook, who like others on the far right is afraid of a government takeover of everything, is already worried about Kansas losing its sovereignty.
"If you're like me, you are deeply concerned about the direction our country is headed, and you want to know the individuals who are at work, putting hard effort into seeing that our liberty is protected, " Pilcher Cook writes in her letter explaining the Kansas Health Care Freedom Amendment. She is dedicated to (note the threatened, militaristic tone):
"A vote against this proposition ... would provide for no constitutional right of a person or employer to purchase lawful health care services directly from a health care provider."
So, voting against her amendment would be saying you don't want people to have a constitutional right to buy lawful health insurance? Of course no one's going to vote against that, but, jeez, Mary, is the government really going to prevent anyone from buying lawful health insurance? It seems like you're protesting a bit too much.

This site was well done. I have been searching for just this kind of site.I am indebted for this information.
How is it possible to increase the number of participants in a healthcare plan and not have increase costs. What turnip truck do you think I fell off of? The same state government officials who assured us that statehouse renovations would be around $92million are now estimating the costs to be over $320million. Give me a break!
I found your US News source to be rather interesting. I had no idea that private health insurance decreases my likelihood of dieing:) Go figure if I stay insured I should never die!
I also found the type of insurance referenced to be interesting--"Private" insurance decreased your chance of death, not Medicare or Medicaid. Private Health insurance will be a thing of the past for the average working class family. Once the presciption drug program was implemented my folks retirement plan cut presciption drug coverage. Why, because the government was now paying for it. The same thing will happen to private health plans.
My family is in the healthcare profession. We see government funded healthcare recipients on a daily basis and let me assure you that health insurance does not equate to healthy people. Personal responsibilty for one's healthcare costs equates to healthy people. For those who might be in desperate circumstances, almost 2% of every dollar spent on private health insurance a year is set aside for those who need the help. The 11% of Kansans not currently insured is largely based on choice.
I'd say the Democrats are in the same pocket as the current health reform bill that just passed in the Senate is basically just a bailout for the insurance industry. It has a few token "reform" points but in the end it will help no one but insurance companies. While I'm no fan of government run health care, the current path is leading away from that into a mire that will end up raising health care costs even more. Sure more bodies may have health insurance, but will they be getting quality health care? And at what cost?
I will say that at least Pilcher's plan preserves the right to pay your DOCTOR directly for health care. Something that everyone used to do and that more people could still do if they frugally self insured...and we got actual health care reform to lower costs back to a more reasonable level.
Are all republicans so ignorant that they don't understand what the word "option" means? This is just more proof that 99.9% of all republicans are in the pocket of big business. They don't care about Kansans because they're only looking out for the insurance industry.
