Update (9:24 a.m. Monday, November 23): Kansas City police say the victim is 27-year-old Wilfredo M. Melgar of Kansas City, Missouri.

Update II (11:16 a.m. Monday, November 23): Court docs allege Knott shot Melgar four times. When police arrested Knott and Clifford V. Jackson, they found a pack of Newport cigarettes, which the robbers demanded, and $83.

Knott confessed to police that he robbed the store and shot Melgar.

Two men surrendered to police Saturday morning after a robbery, homicide and standoff on Saturday.

The two men were suspected of robbing the Abarrotes grocery store in the 3400 block of East 12th Street around 11 a.m. Saturday.

Witnesses told police that two men, described as black males wearing dark hoodies) robbed the store at gunpoint and ran. An employee and his brother chased the men. The employee was shot around 12th and Bales, police say.

The employee was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The employee's brother continued chasing the men and saw them go into an apartment building in the 3200 block of East 11th Street.

Police surrounded and began searching the building. The men surrendered around 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Jackson County prosecutors charged Travis L. Knott, 19, and Clifford V. Jackson, 20, Sunday with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery and two counts of criminal action.
