So it looks like the University of Kansas is going to be in the market for a new football coach.
It's not easy to identify a good person to lead a high-profile sports program. Good recruiters, good talent evaluators, good X-and-O guys -- they aren't too hard to find. But a good person? Good luck.
Mark Mangino is a bully. Quin Snyder was a con man. Frank Martin cheated. Carl Peterson: unlikeable bureaucrat who knew how to manage his boss.
Bill Synder, who is married to wife No. 2, talks about family as if he invented it. He's also been known to take university aircraft to California to see a physician. Burning kerosene in our fragile atmosphere because you don't trust Kansas doctors to hold your balls while you cough? Cripes, get over yourself.
Snyder replaced Ron Prince, who negotiated favorable contract terms better than he did anything else.
Trey Hillman is a self-righteous blowhard. Dayton Moore becomes a brat in the face of criticism. F-bomber Todd Haley seems to take pleasure in showing up people.
Acting like a jerk can work to a head man's advantage, of course. Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick -- not nice people. But they sure do win a lot of games.
It's acceptable for coaches in the pros to treat people like dirt. It gets trickier at the collegiate level. Big-time football coaches are state employees in most cases. In addition, coaches at the amateur level like to stress their roles as leaders of young men. To hear some tell it, their whistles are all that stands between society and chaos. Of course, when a better job opportunity comes along, these headset evangelists tend to forget the lessons about commitment they teach and grab the cash.
So good luck, Lew Perkins, selecting the right despot who can recruit Texas, scheme against high-powered Big 12 offenses and act like a human being from time to time.

Why is Frank Martin the only accusation that includes a link? And I agree with Andrew about the omission of KU basketball infractions and a-hole coaches. Your KU bias is showing. Tisk tisk.
Good job linking a story from 1998 to try and bring down Frank Martin. Reeeeaaaaalllllyyyyy reaching for that one. And you slam Snyder for being married twice? Wonder what you think of half the married couples in the US who end up in divorce. What a crime.
Funny you don't mention Bill Self and all the slimy things he's done. Or Roy Williams. Rolls of money stuffed into sneakers, anyone? It's basketball season uk fans...
