Tomorrow is World Aids Day, which means it's a good day to go get yourself tested.
There's plenty of free screenings, so there's no reason not to get tested if you don't know your HIV-status.
On the Kansas side, the Unified Government Public Health Department has scheduled free HIV testing from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. No appointment is needed, just go to 6th and Ann Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas.
In KCMO, free, confidential, walk-in screenings are scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in a private section of the Health Department's atrium at 2400 Troost Avenue.
If you think you don't need a test, you should consider some facts about the metro's STD rate.
Jackson, Wyandotte and Leavenworth counties have higher rates of AIDS infections than 81.6 percent of the country. Jackson County's rate is particularly alarming, being higher than 92.5 percent of counties in America.
Also this year, Men's Health gave KC a D- for STDs.
And this May 2008 feature, "Change is Gonna Come," notes that Jackson county's infection rate rivals that of sub-Saharan Africa.
So go get tested.

I shudder every time I read the Pitch repeat the claim that the HIV-infection rate for Jackson County rivals that of sub-Saharan Africa. Has anyone tried to verify this, or tried to hold the KC Health Department to support this unsubstantiated claim?
Such nonsense should be all that is required for anyone with a shred of common sense to question any and all information about "AIDS" in the Kansas City area from those agencies whose livelihood depends on the funds coming from Washington, based on "prevalence".
What we need in the area is greater attention to the real causes of disease, including immune dysfunction.
The tests used to detect "HIV" antibodies are flawed and have never been held to a scientific "gold standard". No one can explain why a disease that began among young, white, "fast-track" homosexuals in San Francisco and New York is now affecting African Americans at such a disproportionate rate.
Poverty, drug abuse, environmental toxins and unhealthy lifestyles are among the true culprits causing AIDS-like immune illnesses, and toxic drugs are not going to improve the health of those suffering from such medical conditions.
