Kansas City police say the victim of Tuesday night's fatal shooting is 17-year-old Nelson E. Hopkins Jr. of Kansas City, Missouri.
KCPD detectives believe Hopkins had left the Plaza Library and caught a bus to 54th and Troost prior to the shooting. Hopkins was shot while walking home on 54th Street.
Around 9 p.m., KCPD officers met with Rockhurst University security on an ambulance call for Hopkins, who was unresponsive, at East 54th and Lydia.
Hopkins was pronounced dead at the scene.
If you saw Hopkins or anyone following Hopkins on the bus or after Hopkins got off the bus, call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.

that is trully a lost, and the person that did this should man up and give this family peace by turning his self in to authorities some people may feel that things like that wont happen, but thats when the parents, family members of the perpetrator should turn him in,let him do time behind bars, that way i can send my child to collage a not have to worry about this person cutting my sons dreams short.you my all feel that what im saying is raw,...but its real out here, and we as parents and family need to put a stop to this.
When will we value life in Kansas City or Urban America for that point? I really feel for Nelson's family and friends. Too many times this happens and too many times we bury another young person who would have changed this world.
The lord has gained another angel to set by his side!
Nelson's friends, family and school community are devastated by his loss. He was a good kid loved by all. He was a rising star that was going to accomplish great things despite many forces working against him to bring him down. That same day he had been working with his high school counselor on a college application. It is reported that he even had a college application in his pocket when he was found. It is truly tragic.
Fare the well you bright star!
Dear Pitch: This is a terrible, terrible human tragedy, and all people of good will in the metro feel for this young man's family and friends. Let us desperately hope that the killer or killers are found--and let us also desperately hope that the city establishment does not again insult our intelligence by forcing an unwilling KCPD to release another one of those pathetic "Well, the homicide rate is up sharply in 2008 and 2009 over what it was in 2007, but other forms of crime are also down sharply" statements that are ritually released after every such tragedy. Sincerely, Respectfully and In Christ, Ernest Evans
