I thought med students were supposed to look like frazzled, cash-strapped urchins, dressed in grungy cast-offs from Disabled American Veterans thrift stores. Not these med students.
Claire and Nooreen paused in their brisk walk to class on the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus to bless us with their adorableness. They're both from Kansas City and both are in their second year of UMKC's six-year med school program.
Claire's yellow jacket, fastened with a botanical explosion of clustered buttons, is from Anthropologie -- a store where, I kid you not, I once saw a pair of plain, cotton underwear for $42. The beauty of the clothes at its Plaza location coupled with their unholy price points gives me actual, physical pain when I walk past. Perhaps Claire can prescribe me something for that after she graduates.
But seriously, future MDs, where do you shop when the going gets too tough for real luxury?
"H&M!" Nooreen said.
"But there's no H&M here!" I wailed.
"I know. Anytime I'm in a city that has an H&M, I have to go," Nooreen said.
Every year, like clockwork, an H&M-coming-to-Kansas-City rumor will make its rounds, but shoppers like Claire, Nooreen and I are still waiting for that glorious day. I'm keeping the faith -- we got our Dunkin Donuts, didn't we?
