Lawrencians to world leaders: Don't blow it at the Copenhagen climate summit

Posted by Carolyn Szczepanski on Fri, Dec 4, 2009 at 2:00 PM

For those who adhere to the rational, scientifically proven reality that our hyper-industrial lifestyle has spewed enough global warming pollution into the atmosphere to make Earth decidedly uncomfortable for our grandkids, next week is huge.

Like, last-chance-for-world-leaders-to-get-their-shit-together huge.

Like, the-fate-of-the-human-species-could-hang-in-the-balance huge.

Presidents and prime ministers meet Monday in Copenhagen, Denmark for the United Nations Climate Change Conference, an 11-day summit that environmentalists have been pointing to all year as a do-or-die gathering if we want to put the brakes on global warming before the damage is irreversible and extremely painful. And Lynate Pettengill, a green activist in Lawrence, wasn't content to sit at her computer in Kansas and cross her fingers that politicians hammer out a bold accord. "I felt like something needed to happen because Copenhagen is a big deal," she says. "I couldn't let it pass by. This is a critical crossroads here and we've got to act boldly."

On Monday, she started planning a march in Lawrence. After just four days buzzing around the Internet, the Saturday rally has nine different sponsors and is expected to draw as many as 1,000 people. Pettengill says the point of the peaceful gathering is to show world leaders that everyday citizens want an aggressive agreement that will bring carbon dioxide levels down to 350 parts per million -- the level that many scientists agree is the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere. (P.S. We're bumping up against 390 right now.) "I just want to push that number, get that in people's consciousness," she says.

Even if 1,000 people don't show up to march, the climate message will be witnessed by hundreds. It just so happens that the Lawrence holiday parade is partying down Massachusetts Street at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning. So Pettengill planned the climate march for 10:30 a.m., taking advantage of the sizable crowd.

To join the group, meet Saturday at 10 a.m. at the intersection of 7th and Kentucky streets in downtown Lawrence.

I prefer scientists who have their grammar all lined up in the opening sentence.

But yeah, you're right, true scientist. MAN certainly didn't cause the glaciers to melt in Kansas. I know for a fact it was something that women did, a group of lesbian zionist feminist raw food vegans to be exact...and they've already occupied the higher ground. Better make nice to them while there's still time.

You're the last person I'd want with me in a burning building. "It's too big! There's nothing we can do! Besides, I didn't start it. And if people get hurt, I don't care."

Go ahead an move to higher ground. I'll stay with the rest of my "idiot" friends and do what I can to keep us around for awhile longer.

At one point, southeast Kansas was in covered in water. The ancient Atlantic/Gulf of Mexico came up that far. The oceans were high. At another point in time, we had glaciers in NORTHeast Kansas. They now call the area the Flint Hills. The oceans were low. Now, I ask you what caused the glacier that was in NE Kansas to melt? Was it man? Or was it NATURAL? And... exactly how many of the numerous(triple underline) glacial recession cycles were caused by man? Man may be a contributor to this cycle, but to think we have any control over the world weather patterns is certainly a fools errand. If you think you can stop a hurricane by simply reducing your(collective) carbon footprint, you are idiots. The math truly is against you. (See expanding differential equations and chaos theory). If the oceans rise... !MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND! It's called migration, and is evidenced by evolutionary theory backed by archeological finds. Real science, for real people. Wake up! Gore is just a guy getting rich off of your green paranoia.
