Kansas went into the weekend still looking for a football coach. Stanford's Jim Harbaugh said it wasn't him. Houston Nutt at Ole Miss said no thanks. Ex-Auburn coach Tommy Tubberville lobbied for the job in the Star. But by the end of the weekend,Turner Gill was officially named Kansas' next football coach.
Gill is scheduled to be introduced as Mark Mangino's successor at an 11 a.m. press conference today, which will be streamed online (click here to watch.).
Gill brings a 20-30 overall record in four seasons as the Buffalo Bulls head coach, but getting any wins at Buffalo is a major accomplishment. He'd have been considered a home-run hire at this time last year when Buffalo had won the MAC Championship. But this is 2009, and Gill is coming off a 5-7 season.
Gill is noted as a good recruiter with ties to Texas, and he's assembling a good staff (Carl Torbush, the now ex-defensive coordinator at Mississippi State, and Chuck Long, former Oklahoma offensive coordinator and ex-San Diego State head coach). But Gill is the one who will either make the blue wings rise or flop.

Weekend Scorecard
Quarterback Matt Cassell threw four picks and the Chiefs lost 16-10 to one of the NFL's worst teams, the Buffalo Bills. Aren't you glad the game wasn't blacked out? Although that might have been the best thing for Chiefs fans' mental health.
