Last month's public reading of Sarah Palin's Going Rogue at the Fishtank Performance Studio was so successful that producer Lisa Cordes knew it could be the start of an ongoing series. The problem was finding a timely book written by someone who'd created great political theater or a media spectacle. Lucky for Cordes, Miss USA runner-up, model, underage sex-tape star, and conservative conscience Carrie Prejean has released her own tome, Still Standing: The Untold Story of My Fight Against Gossip, Hate, and Political Attacks.
Tonight, witness Cordes, David Wayne Reed, Janet Henry, Phil Hooser and other luminaries of KC Theater give what will likely be the most tolerable interpretation of Prejean's work possible
"These things are sort of predicated on the idea that the worse the book is, the better a time we'll have with it," Cordes says. "I read this and thought, 'This will work very well.'"
The reading starts at 7 p.m. Entrance requires a donation on a sliding scale between $5 and $15. Aside from the joy of the reading itself, you'll also get to participate in a drinking game and play with puzzles. "We've set up a variety of things to keep people entertained throughout the evening," Cordes says. There will also be videos of Prejean playing as set dressing. No not the video.
The Palin reading went roughly six hours, so Cordes edited Prejean's book down to a more manageable length.
"There was certainly ghost writing with Palin's book, but I think there was less with Prejean's. It's another one of these books with a really quick turnaround, so there doesn't seem to be much time for editing, which leads to a lot of misspelled words and bad grammar. It's actually very similar to Palin's book in a number of respects. There seems to be a template for conservative women that become these media sensations. There's a lot of blaming the media in there. They were both high school athletes, high school basketball players, and there's this mix of religion while being very provocative. Obviously in Carrie's case, part of our interest in her is in her being involved in a beauty pageant and having this feeling of moral superiority."
Regarding the beauty queen background, if you do attend, pageant wear is encouraged.
Assuming tonight is as successful as the Palin reading, Cordes already has ideas for 2010.
"We have the Levi Johnston tell-all and the George W. Bush coming out next year, so I think we'll do well."
