The man shot this morning near 44th and Wyoming has died, according to the KCPD.

The victim, who police say is in his 40s, was reportedly walking to work around 6 a.m. when he was approached by another man. The man attempted to rob the victim, who put up a fight and was shot in the stomach.

The suspect ran north on Wyoming then east on Westport Road.

The victim was alive when police responded to the scene. He was transported to St. Luke's Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Dear Pitch: Thanks for keeping the city posted on the crime situation. Now that we have had several high-profile murders in the recent weeks, expect an end-of-the-year series of articles in the city's media quoting KCPD officials to the effect: "Homicides may be up sharply in the past two years, but other forms of violent crime have declined significantly." The establishments of the nation's cities always force their police departments to issue such statements when there are a lot of high-profile homicides: DC's former mayor Marion Barry used to love to say: "Aside from the murders, DC is one of the safest cities in the country." Sincerely and Respectfully, Ernest Evans
