Sad story from over the weekend. KSHB-TV is reporting that a 21-month-old toddler was rushed to the hospital on Sunday in full cardiac arrest apparently after chewing on one of his mom's alleged PCP-laced cigarettes.
The child's mother, Velma C. Scott, 32, has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child in the first degree -- a felony.
Just before noon on Sunday, the boy was transported to Children's Mercy Hospital in cardiac arrest. Health care workers reportedly found PCP in the boy's system, which triggered a police investigation.
In Scott's home at 1616 Bellefontaine, detectives allegedly found PCP both in liquid form and on a few More's brand cigarettes. Scott reportedly admitted to smoking while pregnant with the boy, but denied current use of PCP. She told investigators the drugs belonged to a friend who had come to her house on Dec. 26.
She later told KCPD detectives the boy "may have 'chewed' on a cigarette," according to the KCPD's probable cause statement.
