Pat Robertson says 'pact to the devil' caused Haitian earthquake

Posted by Justin Kendall on Wed, Jan 13, 2010 at 3:42 PM

You just knew that Pat Robertson would say something stupid about the 7.0 earthquake that killed more than 100,000 people in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti.

In the video above, Robertson tells the "true story" of the Haitian people swearing "a pact to the devil" to free themselves from French rule. "But ever since, they've been cursed by one thing after the other," Robertson says.

Robertson goes on to say the Haitian people "need to have, and we need to pray for them, a great turning to God. And out of this tragedy, I'm optimistic, something good may come."

That's Pat Robertson for you. Always looking on the sunny side. (h/t Media Matters and the Village Voice.)

Aug 14, 1791 - Another course was established when the slaves revolted. On August 14, 1791, a group of houngans ("voodoo priests"), led by a former slave houngan named Boukman, made a pact at a place called Bois Caiman. The priests sacrificed a black pig in a voodoo ritual and drank its blood. Boukman asked Satan for his help in liberating Haiti. In exchange, the voodoo priests dedicated the country to Satan and swore to serve him. They signed no Bill of Rights. They wrote no Declaration of Independence.

I've been there. I had the pleasure of witnessing traditional meal preparation.

Ever had roti chicken with the gizzards still inside?? Chicken sacrifice is pagan. Voodoo and shit. Wouldn't doubt Mr. Robertson on this one.

He's not even aware of exactly when the Haitian Revolution occurred, nor the fact it was Napoleon I, not the III who led France at the Revolution's conclusion (but not the start). Senile, mistaken, illogical, irrational, superstitious, and religious.
