Kansas City's park board has rejected Sunnyside Park at 83rd and Summit Street as a potential off-leash dog park, despite the park being favored by several dog owners as well as Mayor Mark Funkhouser.

Kansas City has one off-leash dog park in Penn Valley Park. Five other locations are still being considered. They include:
  • Englewood Park at Englewood Road and North Troost Avenue
  • Tiffany Springs Park at Northwest 88th Street
  • Swope Park off Gregory Boulevard and near the park department nursery
  • Minor Park at Red Bridge Road and Holmes
  • West Terrace Park, on the west bluff near Sixth Street

The Kansas City parks department has about $220,000 to create a new dog park. There's also a chance for new off-leash areas in neighborhood parks if all of the adjacent residents agree.
