Jackson County prosecutors charged 18-year-old Jonathan E. Brown Jr. with involuntary manslaughter in connection with Tuesday night's homicide in the 7100 block of Indiana.
Kansas City police identified the victim as 16-year-old Jamar Nevels. Police say Brown and Nevels were friends and were running away from dogs when Brown tried to shoot at the dogs. The gun failed to discharge and the teens kept running. While running, the gun finally went off, striking Nevels.
Brown left the scene and put the gun in a sewer near 73rd and Indiana. Brown later led police to the revolver.
Nevels was pronounced dead at the scene.
