Moran calls stimulus a waste, enjoys its bounty

Kansas Congressman (and would-be senator) Jerry Moran agrees with you, America. The stimulus was a big, giant waste of money.

A new CNN poll finds that 63 percent of 1,021 adults think most of the stimulus money went to projects chosen for political reasons. On his Twitter feed, Moran says he agrees with the 74 percent of those polled who said half or more of the stimulus had been wasted. "Glad I voted against it and every bailout," he wrote.

It's easy to make fun of the stimulus in the abstract. The package did not distribute federal money in a dramatic way, such as an airlift or a money booth. But it spends, all right. In fact, Moran's district, the "Big First," has been awarded more than $336 million, according to Recovery.gov, the stimulus tracker.

If Moran were to check around in his home town, Great Bend, he might learn of the following projects and service providers in Barton County benefiting from Washington's fritter-tastic ways:

  • $879,000, in the form of a loan, to the City of Hoisington for water treatment.
  • $560,000 for the Kansas Department Transportation, to resurface a county road.
  • $272,173 for the Hoisington School District.
  • $152,050 for Sunflower Diversified Services, an agency serving adults and children with developmental disabilities.
  • $137,573 for the Great Bend Housing Authority.
According to Recovery.gov, the 1st District tops the 3rd District (represented by the state's lone congressional Democrat, Dennis Moore) in stimulus funding by $91 million.

Stimulus dollars are just another way to say big government. As for Congressman Moran, who can argue with companies in your district getting funding? Everyone else is blowing stimulus money left and right, so why should he be upset if his district gets some of the money? Even though he didn't vote for the stimulus plans, he should hope his district gets every last dollar it can because if not, someone else's will.
That being said, the addition by Shawn is just another example of mis-use of funding. I've seen how companies such as Rural Telephone (the supposed non-profit side of Nex-Tech -- cough, cough) throw money away. I would love to see Nex-Tech/RuralTel investigated for misappropriation of funds because of their "supposed" division between non-profit and for-profit.

You might be better off not using the figures off of recovery.org, since there math is just a lil off. Or for that matter, quoting CNN!

Shouldn't The Pitch have a "republicans are Idiots" tag for stories like this? You could also add that tag to DH's post.

Moran was born in Great Bend. I should have been more precise. Thanks, DH.

Jerry Moran, like every Republican who didn't vote for the stimulus, will claim responsibility for all the good things coming our way while at the same time denying support for the stimulus. Voters need to be smarter than that and realize the games they play. Sorry, Jerry, but you don't get a thumbs up from me for not supporting the stimulus.

Jerry Moran's hometown is Hays, not Great Bend. You also might be better off comparing stimulus dollars per county instead of per district, seeing as how the Big First includes 69 counties. The 3rd District is only, what, 5 counties at the most?
