Knox said a store manager was allegedly meeting with Lawrence police this afternoon, but was unsure if they were doing so with any legal counsel present. He added that the investigating agency in the case was the Criminal Investigation Division of the FDA.
Sacred Journey was the first store near the metro to sell K2, a synthetic marijuana that mimics the effects of real marijuana on the brain. K2 is currently legal, though Kansas state legislators are moving fast on bills that would criminalize the product. If successful, Kansas would be the first state to outlaw the synthetic cannabinoid.
FDA spokesman Tom Gasparoli did not return calls for comment.
Updated: FDA spokesman Tom Gasparoli contacted The Pitch and made the following statement: "The FDA does not publicly comment on criminal investigations."

Dexedrine is a stimulant considered to have a high risk of abuse.
Originally introduced to battle obesity and depression, it has also been
found to improve the ability to focus and concentrate, making it
helpful in the treatment of ADHD and narcolepsy. Dexedrine is sometimes
called "speed" and categorized as an "upper" because of its stimulant
effect. However, when that effect wears off, a letdown or crash follows.
The resulting fatigue, depression and inability to function can be
alleviated by another dose, and therein lies the danger. With prolonged
overuse, the drug can cause dependence and withdrawal symptoms. The high
potential for abuse and addiction is the reason Dexedrine is a
controlled substance.

They have been trying to ban this k2 incense stuff for at least a year and the effort is an utter failure, surprise surprise! Herbal incense itself isn't being banned. Select chemicals that have been found in some of the products are being banned. So all that is happening is the manufacturers of K2 herb products are tweaking the formula to keep their product legal. There are still loads of places you can buy k2 incense, like http://www.buy-k2-incense.com I say put age restrictions on it and regulate it, otherwise we're just dumping more time and money, that we don't have, into a failed prohibition.
Somebody failed hard in Pol Sci.. Here's a quick guide to how laws are structured. It goes something like this: The Constitution, Federal Statutes, Federal Bureaucracy, THEN the states rights come into play. Keep waving that rebel flag Johnny, and drive elsewhere for your fake drugs.
All you tax payers (if you are) have to be pissed about about all the money that is used to pay medical costs of drug users, deaths, auto crashes....do you get it. Besides screwing up the remaining brain you have it does cause financial burden on all of us..............
Tax it and save all the time and arguments for a real issue. Fire all the politicos who need this to prop up their anti-drug credibility. Next!
The state is missing a golden opportunity to bail out of it's budget crisis. By allowing the continued sale of K2, the government receives money the sale through taxes. Although I'm not in support of increased taxes, I would understand a tax for the continued use of K2. To go a step further, they should be working towards approving the use of "pot" and taxing it. Currently we are burdening our court and jail/prisons systems when we could be using some of the proceeds to to pay-off the debt. If Kansas was the first state to legal "pot," think of the growth the state would enjoy as folks would move here, thus bringing more jobs. Rest assured my votes will not be for any of the politicions involved in the current votes and I'll be sure to let them know why they didn't receive my vote.
DAMMIT! wish I could have blog'd long ago about this.... ANON... its called the patriot act. our gov't can do WHATEVER they want. legally.... we appointed people to speak for us and they were all scared by the "national security" after 9/11. we are; "Bent over" if you will. run for office if it is that big a deal to you.... if u think u can change the laws. but yes yes yes I totally agree with legalization... even george washington grew hemp! America = founded by pot!
I think what they're doing is bullshit. All the research ive done on these products containing small amounts TWH- 018 has been pretty positive as long as you use common sense...just like everything else. I have to take regular drug tests and my state hasn't approved med marij for my painful condition yet. Unless i want to take exessive amounts of narcotic painkillers i am investing my money in these products. And will just have to stock up until they decide to send these dumbass DEA to the coast!!!
Just order it online at www.heavenscentincense.com, it is a new site and a new product, however coffee wonk and sensational scents are currently carrying it, try it out! Additional flavors coming shortly!
I saw that they are selling k2 in westport at Glass roots. $30 for 3 grams of summit. 809 w. 39th street (next to missie B's)
It is time for a tea party my friends. I really thing the time has come. The constitution says we have the right to liberty, freedom, and the pursuit of happiness. I cannot see that when the government takes away your house or life savings for a simple tax error how that is constitutional. Nor in this case that the FDA froze this persons bank account. And then illegally raid this place. Also that these people jail our countrymen for victimless crimes like drugs and then take away their right to vote. Fellow countrymen it is time to have some balls and do something. Anyone who wants to buy JWH-18 can write me at research@herbavigor.com
typical republican ass kansas they cant find one problem with this synthetic drug but because people will seel it and the govt cant tax the shit out of it, kansas law makers will rush to ban something they know nothing about it. pure bullshit if the pharma companys came out with thisit woud be fine. but since its a small person trying to make a come up here comes the gop to put thier foot on your neck with the help of the shitty fbi and dea
I have had the same problem with the "white label". If you want good quality I would order online at k2herbal.com a little pricey but worth it.
i am the owner of Sacred Journey and I haven't done anything illegal. the state of ks, not the feds are trying to say the plants that my store, chain stores and most nurseries have sold for years are now illegal.
jon wasn't making drugs, he was in posession of the very same plants i was. you can get morning glory seeds anywhere that sells flower seeds, you can get san pedros anywhere that sells cactus....its not as if anything was hidden. there are ppl all over this nation that sell the very same things i do. i have always been on the up and up, im not a masochist..i am not looking to get hassled by the man.
but thank you all for assuming the worst, or assuming im stupid and should have know. i guess walmart should have know their morning glory seeds contained precursors and the state would eventually come after them~
Has anyone noticed a difference in the original k2 that was sold in lawrence and the k2 being sold at various gas stations and other stores in KC? The bags dont have the same circular label on the front but instead have a white square with the k2 label within that. Almost as if someone had copied and pasted it from a computer. I normally smoke summit and the stuff in KC is terrible. I honestly can say that i dont get a high from it but when i got it from lawrence i was gettin blazed as shit. Maybe im crazy but im thinking that local gas stations and stores in KC are selling a look alike and are cheating people out of money. Anybody else getting that same result?
I think this whole situation with K2 is just another example of A government with a mental sickness..They could make so much profit from K2 and marijuana if they just got a clue and woke the hell up........Not too much longer before your freedom and rights will be made illegal just like this new substance.......Theres gotta be medical benifits to this stuff cause it's so great..They should quit their lame ignorant stupid war on herbal substances completely. There are multiple uses that wouldn't even require any form of bodily consumption....Science has allowed a couple of people to use their brains to figure out how to run a car off wood...Maybe its possible to go the next step with hemp/cannibis..Whynot a synthetic petroleum or alcohol like substance that gives you 200 miles + to the gallon....Or maybe can make a plastic out of it.......Maybe The herbs in K2 is the same way...We never see the scientific possibilities to the different plants we We eradicate from the earth....If that ever happened we would get out of debt with china and other third world bankers......Give's back to the farmers and the economy more than we ever will at this current state and outlook.....Imagine no more need for excuses to create a stimulus package....no need........
K2 is synthetic. The active ingredients are purported to be jwh-018 and jwh-073 which are research chemicals discovered in the 90s by an undergraduate student at Clemson University intended to study the effects of cannabinoid agonists on CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain. Most of the arguments made against it in the KS state legislature are either unfounded or just plain reactionary. It probably should be regulated somehow to stop children and parolees from buying it, but not added to the list of Schedule I controlled substances. Even the American Medical Association has reversed its long-held stance that real cannabis belongs on the federal schedule I because it is not a narcotic. And to anyone who says it's dangerous because it's long-term effects have not been established, two things:
1. There is evidence to suggest that cannabis has been used by humans for about 5000 years. There have been decades of studies on that showing it is safer than alcohol, and yet it is still illegal (despite recent polls showing almost half of Americans support decriminalizing it for everyone, and 80% for medical use). Additionally, there has never been a documented case of anyone ever overdosing on cannabis. Alcohol and prescription medications on the other hand... So, to argue that K2 should be banned for this reason without concurrently proposing or supporting bills to ban alcohol or decriminalize cannabis is nothing short of hypocritical.
2. For anyone who believes having FDA approval makes something safe--Splenda/sucralose is not safe. There are plenty of anecdotal accounts online of people experiencing flu-like symptoms (headaches, chills, hot-flashes, upset stomach) and heart-palpitations (some severe enough to cause hospitalization) from ingesting that. The FDA approved that on about 120 studies (mostly animal--only about 14 on humans) which were all conducted by the manufacturer. Chemically, it is chlorinated sucrose. The manufactuer compares that to table salt, but it's not true. Structurally, it is more similar to pesticides like DDT. The manufacturer claims that it does not get absorbed in the body, but their own studies show that around 14% of it does. Also, the manufacturing process may result in impurities (like heavy metals) that can build up in the system, so--even though 14% may seem like a small amount once--what does that look like over time? And yet I don't see anyone in the KS legislature clamoring to ban that. And it's even available for TODDLERS to ingest!!!
Our laws should be based on principle and facts, not just reactionary fear. Rob Olson (R-Olathe) thinks he's scoring easy political points with this one. Not in my book. I usually don't vote in local elections but will likely vote against him this fall for this one issue alone, regardless of who his opponent is or any other views they may hold.
With the state facing a budget shortfall, people losing their houses, and unemployment hovering around 10% nationally and locally, this is one of the very first things the KS state legislature chose to focus on at the start of their 2010 session? Yet another reason to vote against Rob Olson in the fall.
I'm pretty sure the law will work out in this way : The bill that is waiting to be passed in Kansas will be Kansas law by the time Nature's Walk is prosecuted, and therefore will be charged just as if they were selling something illegal the whole time. This is usually the case with the raids on the head shops. Excuse me, where are the bongs at?
This Robert Olson cock sucker is something else, what an uneducated ignorant prick.
They weren't after K2 or any of its many knock-offs. They were after apparent "precursors to substances on the federal schedule." Essentially, they were looking for ingredients to make other drugs--ones that ARE illegal.
The mere mention of K2 within this article is evidence of irresponsible journalism. K2 has nothing to do with this subject and was tucked in there as a little warning bell for those people who weren't aware of it. It's biased because it sits square in the center of an article about an FDA raid.
Peter Rugg ought to have his pens, paper, and computer taken away.
Perhaps this will become illegal just in the nic of time for "Cannabinoids" to get in the media and get more people concerned on the prohibition of Marijuana. K2 has reached an entire different market that wouldn't ever dream of doing anything illegal but now they see what Marijuana is capable of and how medicinal it truly can be. Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do to stop the FDA from banning this synthetic cannabinoid in K2.
Essentially every 'legal high' that is based on a synthetic cannabinoid (K2, Spice, etc) is made the same way. The synthetic cannabinoid is generally a powder, which is then dissolved in alcohol and applied to random plant matter (often described as potpourri). After the alcohol has evaporated, the plant matter remains imbued with the cannabinoid of choice, is packaged and eventually sold.
These synthetic cannabinoid based 'legal highs' have not had sufficient testing to determine their safety. Natural cannabis has been used for centuries with minimal harm to individual or society, so it seems counterintuitive to allow a product to be marketed that produces the same high with potentially more health risks down the road.
Synthetic cannabinoids break down more quickly than natural cannabinoids and we have no idea what long term effects there may be. There's no CBD in them, the natural cannabinoid that works to decrease anxiety and paranoia associated with THC-like cannabinoids. This is a problem with some high potency natural cannabis as well. Though the average strength of various cannabis strains have remained relatively the same over the years, some varieties such as Skunk have bred to have very high THC content and very low CBD content, which may make for a more intense, and potentially more alarming high.
Most of these synthetic brands don't disclose which cannabinoids they're using, the dose, or the plant matter that they use. There's absolutely no regulation, whatsoever. If these are ever legitimized, they'll need to sort these things out.
Cannabis shouldn't be illegal in the first place. And I find it unfortunate that many users may lose their new 'legal high'. On the other hand, I do see a ban being in the interest of public safety until we know more. If natural cannabis was legal and regulated, this wouldn't be an issue as we'd know exactly the cannabinoid percentages of the product we'd be buying. As it is, both are a growing health concern perpetuated by the drug war and lack of regulation.
Q: "Where would that be?"
quoted from another pitch article.
"By the way, if you live in the metro, Coffee Wonk (3535 Broadway) and ScentSational Scents (10 Westport Road) carry K2."

That's the standard answer from the DEA. And the never will answer till the day of the trial when the press is called. Not revealing WHY someone is arrested should be the crime involved here. Whenever the government hides something...they are doing something illegal.
I'm sick of how the government tries to make me fit their 'moral' code.
Legalize and end the nightmare called prohibition. End the War On People!
What a waste of tax-payers dollars...End the war on drug!
i would love for them to post a statement for the reason of even caring about k2. they have better shit to do than trying to stop fake shit from being sold. but i will say that i have tried k2 and yes i do like it :)
The Feds are wrong. This is BULLSHIT. It has not even been passed into law yet or became effective. Give the shop owners a chance would ya?
How the fuck do you arrest someone for selling something that is still legal? I know the bill is in place to ban it, but it hasn't gone through all the bureaucratic bullshit yet.
Here again we have tyrannical government fucking with peoples lives.Kansas has a long reputation for their fuck-headed stupidity, going back to the war against Northern aggression.Look at this people, the substance is LEGAL.How the fuck,if something is legal can it then be plundered by the suck on Jupiters cock crowd.Every one of the cocksuckers involved in the raid should be dispatched to sunny Jesus with a swiftness!!!!!!Here is something to ponder,If something is legal on a state level, then how can the FEDS prosecute somebody on a federeal level.I mean if you believe the constitution, the states are supposed to be sovereign states. The federals juris my dic-tion is limited to only land that has been ceded specifically to the FEDS by the state, for example military bases.post offices, national parks, etc.Other than those places the FEDS have no juris my dic-tion.The only way the FEDS can do this shit is if the country is in a "NATIONAL EMERGENCY".Which in fact it has been since the cocksucker abraham lincoln was enthroned, quite illegally I might add.The kind of shit you are seeing now between the FEDS and the states is the same type of shit that precipitated the war against the Northern invaders.(civil war for those who are clueless with history)Why does'nt the sheriff's department arrest these cocksuckers(FEDS)?They have the authority to,apparently just not the balls. They are the only elected law enforcement that exists. The police departments don't qualify because the police chief is appointed not elected,so he or she is beholden to what the city directs. The sheriff is elected and is under oath and obligation. The sheriffs, police and FEDS should be arrested tried, and dispatched for crimes against humanity.PERIOD!!!!!!! On another note to the Realist:Timothy McVeigh unfortunately has become the poster child of domestic insurrection. He did not do what he was accused of.There is overwhelming proofs and evidence to maintain this position.I wont go into that at this point, but I do understand what you are saying.
It's all an ingenious plan to force Kansas residents to travel further, as well as outside of Kansas, with their money rather than stay here and spend it on their chosen product. Great work. I'll be making the drive tomorrow, if Secret Journey's still down.
Supposedly some of the botanicals she sells contain chemicals that could be precursors to substances on the federal schedule (of controlled substances).
WTF? Can anybody translate that into English?
You know, every time those worthless assholes in the government pull this kind of trick, my first thought is always "Where's Tim McVeigh when you need him?"
