In a somewhat ironic development, considering all the fuss about dress codes and safety, the Cordish Company just signed a deal that will make KC's downtown synonymous with bare-knuckle violence around the country.

According to a Cordish press release, the company has started a partnership with Bellator Fighting Championships, a mixed-martial-arts promoter, to televise six events from two Cordish sites -- Fourth Street Live in Louisville, Kentucky, and the Power & Light District here in KC.

Those fights are scheduled to be broadcast live in prime time to an estimated 92 million cable subscribers via FOX Sports Net. There also will be a late-night show of fight highlights on NBC and another one-hour Saturday highlights show on Telemundo.

There's nothing "bare-knuckle" about Bellator or MMA. Strikeforce MMA has already staged events at Memorial Hall here in town on more than one occasion. I for one am looking forward to the events and hope the turnout is good enough that maybe one day the UFC will consider holding an event at the Sprint Center.
