Comment of the Week: Don't stop at K2 ...

This week, Kansas state Rep. Gail Finney introduced a bill that would legalize medical marijuana in Kansas. This brave move came in the same week that the House was rushing to outlaw K2 synthetic marijuana and the feds were raiding a Lawrence head shop that sells K2.

Don't count on Kansas lawmakers fighting to legalize marijuana for therapeutic use -- even though the American Medical Association's Council on Science and Public Health found that "smoked cannabis

reduces neuropathic pain, improves appetite and caloric intake

especially in patients with reduced muscle mass, and may relieve

spasticity and pain in patients with multiple sclerosis."

Take this enlightened comment from state Rep. Scott Schwab:

"It has no benefit for pain management. All it does is make you crave

another bag of chips."

Then maybe we need to expand the ban. The Comment of the Week goes to Andrea for her response to Schwab's uninformed comment:

If all it does is cause you to crave potato chips then why is it illegal? If that's the case, pregnancy should be illegal.

Someone draft a bill, stat.

keep it that way, make some money of it, and still not have to face backlash from the old ass bible thumpers in this state like you would if you were trying to legalize mj. Oh yeah, that make too much sense.... way to go Kansas.

I think its time for all of us to let our voices be heard. Lets make note of all the fucks that had something to do with this stuff being banned, and make sure these fools do not get re-elected. Kansas needs us free thinkers, these morons that are running this state need to go. First evolution, now this.... it wouldve made a whole lot more sense to tax to this stuff, keep it legal, make some money for our state. I mean come on, it was already legal, keep it that way, make some money of it, and still not have to face backlash from the old ass bible thumpers in this state like you would if you were trying to legalize mj. Oh yeah, that make too much sense.... way to go Kansas. I guess the only way we will see legalization of k2 or mj is if God and Jesus appear before the kansas state law makers with blunts in their mouths, hey maybe Darwin will be there too and we could get that whole evolution thing cleared up too.

Hey Officer Street Lawyer, go play with your gun and shut the fuck up. You dont have a fucking clue. At 10 bucks a gram for K-2 pot dealers arent going to use it to "cut" and increase profits. You use cheaper materials to step on your drugs to boost profit margin, you moron. Small wonder you are also stupid enough to believe the FDA is working in your best interest. They are protecting the two entities who stand to lose the most from any legal high. Annheiser Busch, and Phizer Pharmaceuticals. Pull your head out of your ass and get informed.

Any substance designed to cause euphoria no matter how you make it or what you make it from is in violation of the 1986 Controlled Substance Act. K2 is widely used by street dealers of marijuana as a "cutting agent" so they can increase their profits ripping off pot buyers and everyone (including Law Enforcement) knows it. Read the federal laws, these guys behind K2 are about to be hit with more serious charges and they are facing up to life in prison. The FDA took this case because they were just given arrest authority over health matters related to smoking substances- see FDA bans flavored tobaccos. The FDA will now be the lead agency shutting down head shops across the country.

K2 is synthetic. The active ingredients are purported to be jwh-018 and jwh-073 which are research chemicals discovered in the 90s by an undergraduate student at Clemson University intended to study the effects of cannabinoid agonists on CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain. Most of the arguments made against it in the KS state legislature are either unfounded or just plain reactionary. It probably should be regulated somehow to stop children and parolees from buying it, but not added to the list of Schedule I controlled substances. Even the American Medical Association has reversed its long-held stance that real cannabis belongs on the federal schedule I because it is not a narcotic. And to anyone who says it's dangerous because it's long-term effects have not been established, two things:
1. There is evidence to suggest that cannabis has been used by humans for about 5000 years. There have been decades of studies on that showing it is safer than alcohol, and yet it is still illegal (despite recent polls showing almost half of Americans support decriminalizing it for everyone, and 80% for medical use). Additionally, there has never been a documented case of anyone ever overdosing on cannabis. Alcohol and prescription medications on the other hand... So, to argue that K2 should be banned for this reason without concurrently proposing or supporting bills to ban alcohol or decriminalize cannabis is nothing short of hypocritical.
2. For anyone who believes having FDA approval makes something safe--Splenda/sucralose is not safe. There are plenty of anecdotal accounts online of people experiencing flu-like symptoms (headaches, chills, hot-flashes, upset stomach) and heart-palpitations (some severe enough to cause hospitalization) from ingesting that. The FDA approved that on about 120 studies (mostly animal--only about 14 on humans) which were all conducted by the manufacturer. Chemically, it is chlorinated sucrose. The manufactuer compares that to table salt, but it's not true. Structurally, it is more similar to pesticides like DDT. The manufacturer claims that it does not get absorbed in the body, but their own studies show that around 14% of it does. Also, the manufacturing process may result in impurities (like heavy metals) that can build up in the system, so--even though 14% may seem like a small amount once--what does that look like over time? And yet I don't see anyone in the KS legislature clamoring to ban that. And it's even available for TODDLERS to ingest!!!
Our laws should be based on principle and facts, not just reactionary fear. Rob Olson (R-Olathe) thinks he's scoring easy political points with this one. Not in my book. I usually don't vote in local elections but will likely vote against him this fall for this one issue alone, regardless of who his opponent is or any other views they may hold.
With the state facing a budget shortfall, people losing their houses, and unemployment hovering around 10% nationally and locally, this is one of the very first things the KS state legislature chose to focus on at the start of their 2010 session? Yet another reason to vote against Rob Olson in the fall.

Has K2 done damage?? Are there deaths??

People are dying who could use Cannabis and their deaths can be made with compassion and a decreased amount of Pain.

Anyone who clearly says "Cannabis does not help with pain" has clearly no idea to what they spew out of their mouths. I deal with Pain every day of my life and if I can get some cannabis it does decrease MY PAIN.. That is all I care about now days. Is to have a pain free moment..

I have an idea.. Why don't you legislators help the people instead of being against them all the time..

How the hell you going to criminalize K2 when it has normal every day plants in it??? Sounds like a waist of tax payers money trying to squish all that might give a buzz.. Hey why don't you criminalize alcohol anyone can get their hands on this..

These fucking idiots in Topeka cant figure out how to pay the light bill for my childrens grade school, but they have time to piss away on banning K-2. Really ? Are you shitting me? Zero evidence of any harm and these baffoons move to ban it. Last year the drug CHANTIX was credited with 1100 fatal and near fatal incidents, why don't these whores move against Phizer? Because these little pricks are sucking Phizer's cock to the tune of 10's of thousands in campaign contributions so they can get re=elected and continue to not work for a living. Sorry , I'm pissed. Thanx for the sounding board.

It doesn't sound to me like Mr. Schwab has done his homework on medical marijuana. My Grandmother, who passed away in 1984, used it for her glucoma. My Father, who passed away in 1996, had kidney cancer and used it for the pain, nothing else. It was the marijuana that kept him pain free and alive longer. They both lived in Kansas all their life. With all the terrible diseases so many people are getting and suffering from and all the painful injuries people are suffering from, why not help these people who Don't Deserve to suffer? Take my advice, Mr. Schwab, vote to legalize medical marijuana now and don't wait until it's you with the cancer, MS, Parkinson's etc... and then you wish you Had voted yes when you had a chance to do the right thing.
Or, Mr. Schwab, everyone could just keep using those useless pain pills and wash them down with a bottle of whiskey. No, that's not for me.

ok, so i've read all these reviews of smoking k2, and i have to say that none of you, NONE of you have any idea what you're talking about.

K2 needs to be smoked from a pipe or glass bowl surface, or apple, or "water-pipe" structure. the reason being is the fact that the blend that the synthetic cannabanoid is on does not burn evenly, the main reason alot of people think it's not as strong is because it doesn't contain trichomes such at thc does, therefore, when you smoke it, be sure to hold it in as long as you can, i'm talking 20 seconds minimum here, you will be "blazed" after one hit, it's up to 5x stronger than kush, nug, ...a.k.a. good stuff and cost about half the price, so if you want to smoke k2, save money on paying for the papers, and go to quicktrip and buy a 69 cent apple, it's half the price and it's disposable, or possibly edible.

K2's blend can be found online easily, but what really makes it tick is JWH-018 or possibly JWH-073, now what I find funny is that kansas is outlawing it without anything behind it, such as, "we will fund john huffman's research more to figure out the synthesis and breakdown of synthetic cannabanoids on the brain and it's receptors," yes, we all should stop smoking it, with the lack of knowledge of long term effects, but if one "drug" is legalized, and another is not, what breaks down the good/evil in drugs, i.e. right and wrong, and really what i mean is why is it now criminalized in kansas to smoke k2, it's because jails are losing money, not our health, and i'll be damned if someone tells me it's to keep it out of highschools, everyone i know can say, well what about alcohol, well alcohol is easily controlled and enforced....our law enforcement makes so much money off of cannabis carrying kids that it's not even funny, johnny law is cracking down on us, remember that we're supposed to control our government, the one who taxes our dollars that we all work hard for, and need especially right now in this tough economy, and uses it to employ cutthroat young men bent on making simple peoples lives a living hell...i mean wheres the justice, and honor in a 200 dollar ticket for an "improper turn" we're already so controlled and we don't even see it....

one last thing before i stop ranting, what is a great reason for cannabis, i.e. thc...not "marijuana" the plant from mexico, (because it isn't cannabis, it's another plant that doesn't contain thc, and they just started using it along time ago in reefer madness...hahahaha) to be illegal..

because the peaceful un-energetic high that thc brings is unwelcome in a capitalist market based society, we are not allowed to be free thinkers, we are supposed to be coffee drinking whiskey guzzlers... that work hard all day

does anyone know the effects of caffeine are on the heart? i think that should be discussed at next legislation too, actually just ban folgers and we'll call it even, remember to vote for us this election!
