During opening statements, Mireles' attorney claimed that Sander was killed by another man who broke into the hotel room after a drug deal gone bad.
The Salina Journal reports that Mireles testified to returning to the motel room and seeing blood, then Sander's body. He then fled the scene because he wanted to be with his family and girlfriend. He didn't know why he didn't call the police, or why he wrapped her body in a blanket and took it with him in the car.
"I was scared," he reportedly said. "I figured the first person they'd blame would be me."
Mireles dumped the body before reaching his 16-year-old pregnant girlfriend, Victoria Martens, in Baxter Springs, Kansas. Authorities found Sander in a ditch off U.S. Highway 54, roughly 53 miles outside of El Dorado. During a coroner's testimony earlier this week, it was revealed that Sander had been stabbed twice in the chest and strangled with a telephone cord; a muscle near her temple had been "pulverized" and her body had a pattern of injuries "consistent with being struck by a beer bottle," the coroner testified.
Authorites found a knife with Sander's blood on it at the Baxter Springs house where Mireles' girlfriend was staying. Mireles is charged with capital murder, rape and aggravated sodomy.
Sander -- an 18-year-old Butler Community College student -- was also known as Internet porn model Zoey Zane. Her November 2007 slaying made national headlines.
