Especially because a recent study of newly diagnosed HIV cases in Missouri shows that infection rates are 8 times higher among blacks than whites, with new cases particularly high among black women. Those women make up 12 percent of the state's population but account for 69 percent of new HIV cases.
If this information inspires you to get involved in prevention, February is a great month to do it. Metro churches are in the middle of the Taking It to the Pews (TIPS) awareness campaign, which focuses on preaching to the black community about dealing with the disease and destigmatizing HIV victims.
Sad to say, this news about disparate infection rates in the black community isn't anything new. The Pitch's May 2008 feature "Change Is Gonna Come" detailed the TIPS program and how, at the time, HIV was spreading so fast in KC that it was comparable to Sub-Saharan Africa. Most of the new cases were young black men and women.

I live here in Kansas City and am one of the HIV-affected (that means I've tested positive on the polyreactive Gallo test, aka "HIV test"). I have has discovered personally that the AIDS drugs are poison and I believe they are responsible for the deaths of dozens of my friends.

I see it didn't take long for the HIV/AIDS denialists to turn up with their foul swearing and even fouler disinformation.
And no, it isn't necessary to be...err... having relations with multiple different partners in order to get HIV. One will do, if they are infected. And one of the major factors in people getting infected is that their partner(s) are not aware of their HIV status. This is why testing is so important.
African Americans are disproportionately affected by HIV for the same reasons they are disproportionately affected by some other transmissible infections such as syphilis - and this has nothing to do with racist assumptions about supposed promiscuity. Viruses and other pathogens do not discriminate by race, but the public health measures needed to control these and other infectious epidemics do.
The relatively high rates of HIV among the African American community are the cumulative result of many years of relatively ineffective public health measures - resulting in poorer use of health services and the higher rates of undiagnosed infection which have driven the HIV epidemic - in the same way undiagnosed and untreated infection has driven other infectious epidemics which have disproportionately afflicted black people.
This has improved in recent years, but there is still a long way to go to reverse the neglect of previous decades.
And of course denial of the kind promoted by Mr Barnett and his friends has been a major cause of the problem, not its solution.
Dr Bauer's assertion that blacks test HIV positive more often than whites because of a racially-based tendency for false positives is hogwash. Black people get sick and die from AIDS in the same disproportinately high numbers as they test HIV positive. (Dr Bauer is not a physician or HIV/AIDS researcher, he is a former "science studies" academic who runs a website as a retirement hobby).
And before following Peter Rugg's advice to rush out and get an "AIDS" test, you owe it to yourself to read The AIDS Trap.
The drumbeat of fear and intimidation continue. The Pitch owes its readers better information than these regular reports targeting black women. They are the new gays in today's AIDS shibboleth.
Stop and think about what these "studies" are saying. Is it really possible that a virus is capable of distinguishing between races and picking on blacks by an 8:1 ratio?
Are blacks really indiscriminately fucking multiple "HIV-infected" partners 8 times more often than whites?
Does anyone ever consider that these numbers simply do not make sense?
