Donald Lee doesn't deny the Community Development Corporation of Kansas City doesn't have the money to pay its bills.
In this week's feature, the president of the CDC-KC put the blame for the developer's financial woes at the doorstep of City Hall. Lee argues that, based on a financing agreement the CDC signed with the city in 2008, the developer is due millions of taxpayer dollars to complete the Citadel Plaza shopping center at 63rd and Prospect.
City officials say that's bunk. According to city attorney Galen Beaufort, the financing agreement was rightfully terminated and taxpayers don't owe the CDC a dime.
While that legal battle plays out in coming months, plenty of other businesses are still waiting to be paid for services rendered for the CDC.
So who hasn't been paid? Here's a snapshot, according to court records:
CCREA LLC (real estate): $6.5 million
JSA Architects: $393,000
Chester Engineers: $244,000
Weiskirch and Parks Engineers: $119,000
Snowmen Inc (snow removal): $11,000
Bliss Associates: $8,400
The CDC also owes thousands of dollars in unpaid taxes on nearly 200 properties it owns in the city's urban core. Many of which, look something like this:
