The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art today announced that Julián Zugazagoitia will replace outgoing director and CEO Mark F. Wilson. Zugazagoitia will be the 75-year-old museum's fifth director.

A press release issued this afternoon by the Nelson details Zugazagoitia's credentials and background and helpfully includes a phonetic pronunciation of the 46-year-old's name.

It reads in part:

Born in Mexico City and educated in France, Zugazagoitia speaks six languages

and has worked at institutions in the Americas, Europe and Africa. Julián

Zugazagoitia (pronounced HOO-lian SZU-ga-sa-GOY-tee-ah) holds a Ph.D. in

Philosophy from the Sorbonne Paris IV, with a focus on Aesthetics and Modernism

in the arts.

Zugazagoitia was most recently director of El Museo del Barrio in New York City. Speaking about his role there, Zugazagoitia told the online

business journal Crain's New York in 2004, "This job makes me whole. I can

finally assert my Mexican identity and my Latin American perspective."

Like the Nelson, which reaped considerable attention and acclaim from its Steven Holl-designed Bloch Building three years ago, El Museo has also recently expanded. Last fall, it reopened following a $44 million face-lift presided over by Zugazagoitia.

The Kansas City Star concludes its introduction to Zugazagoitia with a welcoming "Inferiority complex? Who, us?":
Zugazagoitia will move to Kansas City with his wife, Tasha, and two

children, 10 and 6, who have lived in New York all their lives. He has promised

to get them a pet to help ease the transition.

It would be cool to report that the children's names are 10 and 6, but those are just their ages. Meanwhile, the Star continues to urge Kansas Citians to get pets to help ease the pain of living here.
