Did you know that the Bannister Federal Complex is a Superfund site? The EPA did!
But NBC Action News' Russ Ptacek reports that few others knew about the site's Superfund status -- including the people who worked there.
According to documents forwarded to The Pitch by environmental watchdogs, the three areas that make up the Bannister Federal Complex -- the KC Plant, the Federal Center and the General Services Administration's offices -- were each entered into the EPA's Superfund database in 1987. The plant, which manufactures non-nuclear parts for nuclear weapons, is currently operated by Honeywell for the U.S. Department of Energy.
The polluted areas can't be found on the National Priorities List of
Superfund sites (the most easily searched list of blazing-hot places
like Rocky Flats) because a 1989 assessment
determined that the Bannister areas rated a score of less than 28.5 on
the Hazardous Ranking System. We imagine the Hazardous Ranking System
