Jerry Moran: I'm the true conservative, dang it.
Kansas will elect a new U.S. senator in November. The real action takes place in August, however, when Republicans decide which white, conservative congressman they want to see drub a hapless Democrat in the general election.
Jerry Moran and Todd Tiahrt, the two congressmen, are pretty much the same guy. But that's not what they want Republican primary voters to think, so the two men are playing up their differences, even when they don't exist.
Moran recently released a press release celebrating a high rating from the American Conservative Union. A substantial portion of the press release mocked the conservative bona fides of Tiahrt -- who received the exact same score.
Both men rated a score of 96 for their votes in 2009.

Todd Tiahart, like Moran, scored big with a conservative group.
Moran did not reach 100 because, in a weak moment, he voted to expand the state children's health insurance program.
Tiahrt missed out on being a "defender of liberty," a title reserved for lawmakers who toe the conservative union line on every issue identified as important, for voting against an attempt to delete an earmark for an
airport named for John Murtha, the Pennsylvania lawmaker who died last month.
Moran is claiming that Tiahrt's 96 score deserves an asterisk. Moran says Tiahrt has been soft on pork-barrel spending, and he has
the data to back it up.
Tiahrt, in turn, can brag on the fact that his lifetime score from the American Conservative Union (95.27) betters Moran's (91.74).
Next month: The two men debate which ice cream is best -- vanilla or French vanilla.
