Rookie officer bruised in traffic stop/collision of suspected drunk drivers (updated with video)

Posted by Justin Kendall on Mon, Mar 15, 2010 at 4:19 PM

Update: Want to see a holy shit moment? Just wait until 36 seconds into this video. Chief Jim Corwin posted it on his blog today, and it shows the officer flying when a suspected drunk driver slams into the back of a car involved in a traffic stop.

Corwin writes:

It was a little after 3:45 a.m. Friday, March 12. A sergeant had pulled

over a drunk driver at 83rd and Troost, and other officers came on

scene to help with the arrest. A 24-year-old officer was standing next

to the driver's door of the drunk man's car beginning to take an

inventory of the vehicle when they heard squealing tires, and another

car driven by an intoxicated woman slammed into the first car, which

slammed into the officer. You can see him being thrown to the pavement.

It was an incredibly scary moment, but fortunately, the officer

suffered only bumps and bruises to his right leg. He was taken to a

hospital as a precaution but was released soon afterward.

A 24-year-old rookie police officer was struck by a suspected drunk

driver after stopping another driver suspected of driving drunk.

KCTV 5 has

the story. The officer had pulled over a driver near 83rd Street and

Troost Avenue around 3:45 a.m. when a second driver reportedly swerved

and struck the car in the initial stop.

The crash pushed the first

vehicle into the officer, who reportedly suffered a bruised leg and was

taken to a local hospital as a precautionary measure.

Both drivers were arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.

The timestamp looks like 0339 to 0340 hours to me (3:39 a.m. to 3:40 a.m. if you prefer), which is indeed "a little after 3:45 a.m." Also, the statement about the time was made apparently made by Chief Corwin, not the rookie cop that got slammed by the car. Am I missing something Edwin (entirely possible as I've been up for 20 hours), or did you just fail to read the entirety of the report and somehow look at the video wrong? Granted, the initial traffic stop almost certainly occurred closer to 0325 or 0330 hours, as it takes some time to run a suspect through field sobriety, and there is a 15 minute observation period before the officer can administer a preliminary breath test, if he chooses to use such a test. I am not familiar with the operating procedures in that jurisdiction, so I can only speculate about what occurs prior to the footage shown in the clip above. In any case, Corwin's statement appears to be in reference to the second accident, not the initial traffic stop.

Regarding Bob's comment about "warrantless, suspicionless checkpoints", the second sentence in Chief Corwin's statement indicates that the sergeant made a regular traffic stop, which would be a result of the suspect driver's violation of at least one traffic law, at least where I live. The fact that other officers then responded to the scene (as Corwin states) indicates to me that this was not a checkpoint.

I'm just sayin'...

Regardless of know-it-all internet posters (such as myself), I too am glad no one was seriously injured.

It is impressive how this cop officer is still alive, cos the drunk driver was totally out of mind. I think think the cop does not tell this story again.

"It was a little after 3:45 a.m. Friday, March 12." says the officer who got hit in his report.

I'm pretty sure it happened a little BEFORE 3:45 since there is a timestamp on the camera. Makes you wonder how reliable this officer's testimony with regards to timelines is.

I mean that ten minute gap could mean the difference between some dude being guilty or innocent if that were written in an incident report where a shooting occured or something. I'm just sayin'.

Wow, amazing what can happen at warrantless suspicionless checkpoints that violate people's constitutional rights. Well, at least nobody got severely injured.
