Liberal blogs are biting the heels of U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback after he and other Republicans criticized the Obama administration for rebuking Israel.
The White House wagged a finger at Israel after an interior minister announced a plan to build housing in East Jerusalem. Vice President Joe Biden said the announcement undermined attempts to make peace in the region. Brownback said the administration was wrong to attack an ally over what he termed a "zoning decision."
Think Progress and other blogs note that the administration's decision to chide Israel comes at a time when David Petraeus, the general who oversees the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, is warning policymakers that Israeli intransigence makes his job a bigger pain in the ass than it has to be. And when a Republican was commander-in-chief, Brownback said Petraeus was a smart man who deserved our full and undivided attention.
Oh, inconsistent politicians, how the Internet hates thee.

Oh yeah... the building of 1600 new structures on disputed land will do nothing to the security of Israel one way or the other. That kind of thinking is what caused all those missiles to be pointed at Israel in the first place. And if another country does something that insults my country or one of its representatives.. I will always say something.
If a nation does something that is insulting to my country or its representatives I think I'll go ahead and say something. This action, regardless of "deeds", does nothing to enhance the security of Israel... quite the contrary.
But you're right, we should have any opinions on how Israel conducts its foreign policy, it's not like we send them billions of US taxpayer dollars in military aid or anything.
Walter, US citizens actually have the right to say whatever they want, for the most part. It's in one of those amendments.
It seems to me that since the deed for the land on which the homes are to be built is in the name of Israel, the United States has no ligitimate right to say what should or should not be built there. And the truth be told, whether or not Israel builds there will have no favorable impact on Israel's security. Israel always has been and always will be the target of arab aggression; they might as well do it their way. People here in the United States are not on the pointy end of arab missiles and threats.
America just needs to stop giving israel money and weapons. Once they're on their own we'll see how well they cooperate with their neighbors.
Senator, senator... you should really try being a statesman once in a while instead of a politician all the time. An insult is an insult regardless of the administration.
