Kansas City police last night arrested 19-year-old Phillip D. Martin, whom Jackson County prosecutors charged Monday with killing Gurpreet Singh, 35. Singh was robbed and killed as he was working the midnight shift at the 7-Eleven at 85th Street and Bannister Road.
Singh had cooperated with the robber who pointed a gun at him and demanded cash, but the gunman shot him anyway. Singh died later at a hospital. The Kansas City Star reports that Singh leaves behind two children, who will be raised by his brother, Gurbhushan Singh, and his family.
Singh's relatives have set up a scholarship fund in his name.

He got a break. Only 30 years in prison. my friend Tony will never get to hug his children again and this criminal will get to. He should have been crying for joy that he only got 30 years. I will say I am glad this murderer is off the street and he can think everyday in prison that decision he made that early St. Patricks Day morning. Tony was a wonderful Father to his two children, for them I grieve still. He was a wonderful friend to me and I cherish the time we had and miss him everyday. However, from what I understand, Phillip Martin hasn't had many advantages in his short life and for that I'm very sorry. I'm also sorry that, for whatever reason, he felt it was necessary to steal and ultimately kill that night.
Tony came to this country about the same age as Phillip is today because he and his family didn't have many advantages in India. He couldn't speak English nor did he have a job but he got a job, learned the language and made a life for himself and his family. He worked two jobs to give his children a better life.
I considered Tony to be an honorable man. I pray that Phillip will work past this and become a man of honor. I have faith in him and believe that he will.

I moved from KC some 15 years ago, but I do recall working out near this 7/11 at the Bally's Gym. It was a 'fairly' decent neighborhood. I am going to presume section 8 living has expanded to this neighborhood as well.
However, a previous writer is wrong to overcast violence to all predominantly African American neighborhoods in Kansas City. My family still lives in one, not too far from the scene of this crime, and the neighborhood has actually aged and is quiet as ever. All the young people, like myself, have grown up and moved out or away. None of my friends were victims or perpetrators of violent crime.
I can't say that I'd ever move back to Kansas City, but I can say most black people in the city are law abiding folks, trying to make it just like everyone else.
