Shooting a cop will get you 30 years without parole.
Ali Akbar Walker, 24, was sentenced today in federal court to 30 years in prison without parole. Walker, who legally changed his name from Bryan Walker,
Kansas City police arrested Walker and 26-year-old Kyle A. Gardenhire following a traffic stop near 71st Street and Myrtle Avenue on August 7, 2007. But it wasn't so simple. Gardenhire tried to flee and ran his Chevy Monte Carlo into a cop car. Walker was riding in the backseat and began shooting at the officers, hitting and severely injuring Paul Clark.
The police shot back, hitting Gardenhire.
During the arrest, police recovered three semi-automatic pistols, an
empty magazine and several spent .22-caliber shell casings along with 30
baggies of marijuana (190.61 grams).
Walker had a couple of
prior felony convictions for unlawful use of
a weapon, tampering and fleeing. So having a gun was a big no-no for
him.
In August 2009, Walker pleaded guilty to possession with the intent to
distribute marijuana, carrying a firearm during a drug trafficking crime
and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Gardenhire
pleaded guilty to using marijuana while
in possession of a firearm; he was sentenced to three
years and one month in federal prison without parole in December 2009.
