Kansas City's great teacher purge of 2010 is just beginning.

Last night, the Kansas City, Missouri, School Board approved a list of teachers to

fire due to "poor performance" and also set aside $4 million to offer retirement incentives to about 500 teachers and employees, according to KSHB Channel 41. This is on the heels of the district closing 26 schools.

The employees will get five days (April 5-9) to decide whether to retire. Those who choose to retire will get $20,000 when their contract expires in July (and their decision will determine how many non-tenured teachers get axed).

April 15 is the deadline for teachers to know if they're safe.
