Republicans in Topeka are trying to look busy in the eyes of their God-fearing constituents. That means bills dealing with abortion, guns and nudity.

State Rep. Joe Patton of Topeka told The Kansas City Star the sexually oriented businesses need to be regulated because they foster criminal behavior. "Prostitution. ... Homicide. Sexual trafficking. Rape. We are a better

people than that. This is Kansas, for Pete's sake. Let's start acting

like it."

Far be it from us to say that a trick has never been turned in an

establishment with a shiny metal pole bolted to the floor. But homicide?

Dag, if that's true, this blog entry might have been typed at a morgue. (The Pitch shares a block with an establishment where flesh if bared.)

A peer-reviewed study of sexually oriented

businesses in Charlotte, North Carolina, found that an adult nightclub

does not increase crime reports in the vicinity. Indeed, the study indicated that areas

around adult venues actually experienced less crime.

Patton, surely, has his studies, too. (He did not respond to an e-mail.)

State Sen. Matt Bartle, who heads the pasty police in Missouri, has cited research promoted by the Alliance Defense Fund, a group known for defending same-sex marriage bans and throwing awful bachelor parties.
