Scott Roeder, convicted of killing George Tiller, sentenced to 'Hard 50'

  • It'll be long time, if ever, before Scott Roeder sees daylight.

Scott Roeder, the man convicted of murdering Wichita abortion provider George Tiller, was sentenced Thursday to the "Hard 50," meaning Roeder will serve 50 years before being eligible for parole.

Roeder was also sentenced to a year for each of the two counts of aggravated assault. It all totals to life in prison without a chance of parole for 52 years.

As Roeder was leaving the courtroom, he yelled at prosecutors that the blood of the unborn is on their hands. Security quickly escorted him out of the courtroom.

In January, a Wichita jury convicted Roeder of first-degree murder for killing Tiller as well as two counts of aggravated assault against two witnesses. Jurors deliberated for less than an hour.

In

his statement before the court Thursday, Roeder said he didn't think he

deserved the Hard 50. He claimed his views had been

silenced by the court. He described late-term abortion procedures. He

claimed he killed Tiller "so he couldn't kill again."  The decision was

to do so was most agonizing. He called Tiller a "hit man" for

the state of Kansas and spoke of judgment day coming and God

avenging the deaths of aborted babies. Then he started reading from Why shoot an abortionist? by Paul Hill, who was executed for murdering an abortion provider.

And it went on and on and on. It was as if Roeder were trying to filibuster his way out.

Judge Warren Wilbert grew tired of it all.

Wilbert told Roeder that his sentencing

hearing was his chance to convince him that he should get a lesser

sentence, "not a soapbox for your political views."

Other notable moments from today's sentencing:

  • Roeder had several outbursts about "unborn babies" and dying babies. Early on Wilbert threatened to remove him from the court. But later, the judge just ignored him and several officers surrounded him.

  • Roeder told Wilbert that if he followed a higher power, he'd acquit him

  • David Leach of the Army of God, an anti-abortion group that

celebrated Tiller's killing and called it justifiable, told the court that Roeder yearns to be a

"law abiding citizen." Leach said Roeder killed Tiller out of love. He remembered

Roeder sharing a story of being cold in his jail cell and no one would

give him anything for warmth. Except the lord, who provided toilet

paper. Roeder wrapped himself in toilet paper to keep warm.

  • Tiller's attorney and friend Lee Thompson spoke,

noting Roeder's "lack of remorse" and calling the killing an "act of

domestic terrorism" and a "gutless act of terror in a house of

worship." He spoke of Tiller's love and devotion for his family. He

also talked about Tiller's patients, and their appreciation for him.

Tiller was serving as an usher at a church service when Roeder shot and killed him last May.

Roeder

claimed his only option for stopping Tiller from aborting unborn babies

was to shoot and kill the doctor at a church service.

Yes. Tiller was murdered by Roeder to accomplish his political goal.
He used violence and the fear of further violence to close down the abortion clinic.
In other words, it was an act of terrorism.

This guy is a right wing terrorist, no doubt about it. If his name was Ali, he would be getting waterboarded in Guantanamo right now, and the conservatives would see absolutely zero hypocrisy in it.

Good, although I think he should have gotten the death penalty.

I am not a supporter of abortion, but I am also against cold blooded murder, and he deserves to rot in jail.

Shouldn't that read :

"It all totals to life in prison without a chance of parole for 52 YEARS."

I am a born again Christian and I think people who believe like Roeder are just plan narcissistic and ignorant. How pious to believe that what you think is the right way and no one elses is. I am very familiar with that growing up in Texas. The religious right is truly neither, not religious nor right. How small and powerless their god must be. Instead of rejoicing in the mystery and awesomeness of God, they take their fear and ignorance and squeeze god into that little box. They believe some illusion of grandeur that they can take matters in their own hands and justify killing someone else.

What so funny about this entire thing is, if there wasnt a justification to keeping abortion an option, Roeder is the poster child. Its obvious that Roeder should have been aborted along with all the other nuts who can justify this type of murderous behavior. Praise the Lord!!!

I get so dang sick of all these breeders and their brats. China has a good idea - one kid per family. Oh yeah... They also have more than 20 Million abortions (that are recorded) over there yearly.

Well, which is worse?

DYING BEFORE YOU EVER LIVED, OR LIVING A LIFE IN WHICH EVERY DAY YOU WISH YOU WERE DEAD?

Makes sense to me, but then again religious folk have historically never been known for their intelligence and ability to think freely.

When will you realize that Jesus was insulting you by calling you a flock of sheep?

You lead a line of sheep into a circle and they'll follow one another for hours until they collapse from exhaustion, as they're too stupid to think for themselves and just follow the dumb ass in front of them.

Hmmm. All these fanatics want babies to be born to mothers who do not want them, families who turn their backs on them, and to a society that will loathe them and a penal system that will house and feed them for life.

Instead of killing abortion doctors, how about going out and adopting all those unwanted babies you're so crazy to make sure don't die in the womb? No wait, that's right. You can't because Child Welfare says you're too bonkers to be allowed to care for a kid.

Maybe one day you'll get smart enough to start destroying each other and we'll finally be rid of the religious weirdos of the world. No wait, that hasn't worked in other countries either. They've been killing each other for centuries and they're still everywhere...

At least some of you pay taxes. And I must say, it's great hanging out at the park on Sunday morning since you're all in church. It's so quiet and peaceful then...

He could have spent those 50 years fighting to reform abortion policies.

Or, raising some kids from foster homes whose parents wished abortion had been an option.

Either way, God doesn't care about you or anyone else, and he never will. Get over yourself.

None of what you're saying makes any god damn sense.

If you think abortion is murder then why are you condoning this actual murder?

And I have to comment on this... "Taking God's business into their own hands" - Is God so powerless to the actions of one mere mortal?

If people aren't given a right to abortions, they'll just find worse solutions instead of safe ones. It happened before, it would happen again. People that believe that women should have no choice for what they do to their own bodies (especially men,) should shut the hell up.

There is a way that seems right to a man, but the ends thereof are the ways of death. I do agree with Roeder's attitude about abortion as i am sure most Americans are opposed to abortion. However, he should have known that vengeance is mine says the LOrd. We are all products of our own decisions and unfortunately, Roeder took things into his own hands, instead of leaving that business with the Lord. Likewise it is not our place to go ripping humans from their mother's womb as God placed them there. Yes,the judgement day will be quite a telling day. Roeder i am sure will ask for forgiveness from the Lord and will receive it. Even Tiller, if he recognized his sin of murder, could have received forgiveness

I agree Mike, This is a sad day, for one I don't agree with him murdering Tiller, because God takes care of people who commit such evil deeds, mr Tiller is most likely in hell, for torturing and murdering all of those babies, he may have went to church, but going to church doesn't save you, only Jesus Christ does, and mr tiller had no good fruit, all of his fruit he produce was bad, rotten and it fell from the tree....As for the people who defended them and this socalled judge, all of them will have to stand infront of the greatest judge who is just and that is King Jesus..one day every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord......

It is a sad thing for a woman to be unable to exercise her constitutionally protected right to terminate a pregnancy. You're perfectly entitled to your opinion, but the law of the land states that a woman has a right to an abortion. It's always sad when people can't exercise their rights.
