Fred Phelps' estranged son holds closet door for dad

Posted by Justin Kendall on Fri, Apr 2, 2010 at 11:05 AM

The estranged son of homophobic preacher man Fred Phelps granted his first television interview to a Canadian news magazine. Nate Phelps told Peter Klein of The Standard current-affairs program that he believes his father displays the signs of being a "sociopath" and the Westboro Baptist Church is cult-like.

Credit Klein for asking Nate whether he had ever witnessed anything that

would point to Fred Phelps repressing his own homosexuality.

"There just isn't anything there in my own experiences growing up there

that would suggest that," Nate Phelps said. "In fact, there was

absolutely no discussion of sexuality in any sense, other than that

condemnation from behind the pulpit."

Nate Phelps added, "He reads it [the Bible] that homosexuality is the ultimate defiance of god and that's the source of this."

Klein and Phelps cover a whole lot more in the 31-minute interview, which is worth watching.

Nate Phelps, who lives in British Columbia, is also slated to be a guest speaker at the Million Fag March rally against Westboro at the Gage Park Amphitheater in Topeka on May 1.

This Westboro Baptist Church says they hate the Gay-Community.
But, they also hate African Americans, Dr. & Mrs. King, Canada, Sweden, the
Fire Department of N.Y., victims of 911, other Christian churches, the pope,
Judaism, America, our American troops and the list goes on and on. Many of the
groups they despise are specifically named on their hate propaganda, picket
signs and their many websites. They not only hate, but wish death on all whom
they abhor.

This so-called “church” spreads its hate through picketing in
our streets, provoking attacks, with abusive language and flag desecration,
attempting to create a confrontation. This is not about protesting, this is
about a life of hate. They are in it for the money and the press.  They are not a "church." They go
after any thing that can get them in the news. This group will protest anything
to get its face on TV or in the news. This group is lost in the darkness of
hate, and will put there children in danger to shield themselves.

These people protest at the funerals of our troops. Do we have a
real need to protest at any funeral? Is that a real freedom?

The city of Topeka, the state of Kansas and the U.S. at large,
its citizens and their churches, schools and events are all held hostage by
this "hate group."-always at the tax payer's expense.

From what I've read they are all lawyers and bring law suits against anyone they can and apparently win quite often. Sad that they know how to manipulate our system to their favor but it is what it is. We live in a free country and freedom isn't always pretty.

Phelps has been in and out of mental hospitals for years, so I understand. He obviously IS a sociopath.

His son was not born yet when Fred Phelp's mother caught him at the age of 11 giving a 6 year old cousin oral sex. He has spent a life time suppressing his own gay urges.

Fred Phelps & his so-called church will tell you that they are not perfect, and according to scripture if you break one commandment you are guilty of breaking them all.
So that makes Fred Phelps & his church all practicing homosexuals and enablers = hypocrites.

There has to be something wrong with this guy. Calling himself a preacher and using language like that. I think he is just trying to get all the fame. Sick sick man if you ask me, and 13 children, come on...........

While I abhor the Phelps cult and everything they stand for, it honestly breaks my heart to think of those children being subjected to the same level of hatred as their parents through no fault of their own apart from following what they think is the proper example set by their parents. Thinking about a child have things thrown at them and being yelled at makes you realize WHY some of the younger people in Phelp's group are so hateful. They must have an intense amount of anger toward a society that they have been hated by for their whole lives.

FYI: RDFRS is proud to co-sponsor Nate Phelps' upcoming event in Topeka, Kansas. Nate is the estranged son of "God Hates Fags" Pastor Fred Phelps, and he is now returning to his hometown, which he hasn't been to in many years. Nate will tell his story of growing up in the family that founded the infamous Westboro Baptist Church, which he left at midnight on his 18th birthday.

The Richard Dawkins Foundation will be filming the event as part of an upcoming documentary about Nate's story of religious abuse, how he survived, and his mission to fix the laws that protect the perpetrators.

The event is FREE TO THE PUBLIC, so we encourage everyone in the area to attend if possible. This is also the first time one of the Phelps children has spoken out publicly against the church in their hometown.

If you have a spare hour, I highly recommend the BBC documentary referenced in this video. The saddest parts are the ones involving the children; at one point, one of the kids is hit in the head with a Sonic cup thrown by a passerby. At another part, Shirley, the mother, is trying to get her son to regurgitate hateful indoctrinated phrases, like "soldiers are fags," "dikes are going to hell," etc. It really is tragic that those kids will grow up to be just like her, and there's not anything anyone can do about it. At one level, I find it hard to condemn even her...I can imagine her growing up 40 years ago, completely innocent, with Fred Phelps implanting his ***** ideas in her mind. He and his wife are the real poison.

I loathe Westboro Baptist, but why the focus on whether or not Phelps is gay? I mean, the son called it here...the guy is a sociopath and the group is a cult. But the whole tone of the thing is, "He must be a repressed gay man." I just don't think there's any indication that Phelps is gay.

Boy, I wish that my family could afford to gallavant around the country with the regularity of the Phelps clan. Their activities obviously require a great deal of funding. It's too bad that the program didn't even consider asking who bankrolls them.

Dammit!
I just entered a long and comprehensive comment, and when I hit the submit button my FireFox hung.
Was it somehow saved or is it lost and I have to do it again?

Hahaha. I'm so glad the video mentioned "democrat" and "libertarianism".

It's true. Southern democrats and libertarians have always favored liberty over equality.

John Randolph once said, "I am an aristocrat. I love liberty, I hate equality."

Murray Rothbard was the founding President of the John Randolph Club whose goal is to "defend of the family" and "renewal of Christendom".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J...

Remember this folks: Government can play good guy and bad guy. Sure, government can do evil stuff but when government comes around and actually do something good (like legalize gay marriage), the libertarians will cry "big government". Just like how the southern democrats used the constitution to defend slavery.

I think he meant to say Falwell. Which is kind of funny that Falwell had a Fred Phelps send-off and Christopher Hitchen's awesome shoebox eulogy on the news!

Nate Phelps is my new hero for overcoming such horrific indoctrination and now educating the public about it.

Did he say that he picketed Billy Graham's funeral? Graham is still alive.

This is a great interview, though. Good to see people from the inside speaking out.
