Spring is that magical time of year when a young man's fancy turns to love. In that spirit, here's the story of the doomed romance that society wouldn't tolerate, just because he was a 45-year-old disc jockey with a creepy minivan and she was a 13-year-old girl.
Actually, based on the police reports, it's probably for the best that Shawn Murphy doesn't DJ any more high school dances.
Murphy, of Independence, was indicted on 13 counts of felony sex crimes today in Jackson County.
The charges include statutory rape, statutory sodomy and child molestation. Each count lists the victim -- unnamed -- as only 13 years old when they first had sexual intercourse.
Murphy owns his own disc jockey business, Built For Sound, offering services for weddings, bar mitzvahs and school dances among other events. According to police reports, he was a regular DJ for Karaoke nights at an Applebee's.
Court documents allege that Murphy met the girl on the Internet, claiming to be as young as 13 and as old as 28 in multiple exchanges. The relationship started with chatting online before meeting in person.
Murphy and the teen first met in person when the girl sneaked out of her parents' house to meet him. He picked her up in his minivan and drove around until he allegedly claimed that the van had run out of gas. They allegedly had sex in the back of the vehicle.
Over the course of their relationship, Murphy allegedly gave her four pairs of thong underwear as a gift along with a teddy bear and a card saying he "doesn't care about her age." There was also a lot of alleged intercourse, oral sex, and an occasional hand job.
Murphy also allegedly photos of the teen in various states of undress and e-mailed nude photos of himself to her Yahoo account. The teen later told police that Murphy gave her alcohol and told her it would make sex more exciting.
Eventually the girl's parents and friends found out about the relationship, and from there it was only natural the police were notified.
Lest we assume this was just about sex, Murphy allegedly told her that he wanted to start a family with her and marry her when she turned 17. He allegedly often told her he wanted to ejaculate inside her so she could impregnate her. At one point, they planned on running away together, and she even had some of her stuff packed -- but she fell asleep waiting for him to show up.
When the teen was interviewed by investigators, she told them she didn't want Murphy to go to jail because she cared about him.
