The Theater League-produced live radio show that used to emanate from the Mutual Musicians Foundation is heading downtown.
12 O'Clock Jump gets a new name and a new venue May 1, when 12th Street Jump airs live at midnight from a bar in the lobby of the Marriott in downtown Kansas City, Missouri.
The blues, jazz and comedy show has been in repeats on KCUR 89.3 since Theater League and the leadership at the foundation failed to come to terms on a new contract. The show's departure disappointed some foundation members.
Though the program is leaving 18th and Vine, Theater League will stay
within range of Kansas City's celebrated history of music and night
life. Bandleader Jay McShann performed at the Continental Club, which was located at 12th and Wyandotte, one of the four corners the Marriott touches. The Reno Club, where Count Basie played, stood at 12th and Cherry, eight blocks to the east.
The May 1 edition of 12th Street Jump will feature the music of Duke Ellington and Henry
Mancini. Kansas City-based singer Angela Hagenbach will
perform in addition to the regular cast.
Theater League says
validated parking will be available.
In a press release announcing the move, Theater League Director
Mark Edelman alluded to the accessibility of the performance space at the
Mutual Musician Foundation. It's on the second floor, at the top of a
tight staircase. Edelman said his 89-year-old father would be able to attend the
show at the Marriott "if he can stay up that late."
