Yesterday was a holiday of sorts, but I didn't get the day off.
Yesterday was 4/20, known to marijuana smokers as the pot smokers' holiday.
The Kansas City chapter of NORML hosted a rally at It's A Beautiful Day at 3916 Broadway, which oddly started at 4:25 p.m.
I dropped by and snapped a few photos.
Brandon Ryan, the guy on the left, is the president of KC's NORML chapter. He's pushing for medical marijuana reform -- H.B. 1670 -- on behalf of his father, who he says is dying from multiple sclerosis. I didn't catch the other guy's name, but he had the firmest handshake I'd ever experienced.
Ryan estimated about 75 people were out to the rally. The sidewalk in front of the store was packed with people listening to a band, whose lead singer kept repeating "legalize it" or "decriminalize it."
There were also a couple of dozen people hanging out in the adjoining parking lot, including a couple of cute girls hula hooping.
Some guy's truck was treated like a chalk board. He offered to let me and the
Crap Archivist write on it. We passed. We had important things to do, like eating tacos and watching
Lost.
But even during a commercial break on
Lost, KMBC Channel 9 anchor
Larry Moore was talking about legalization.
