Raul Ortiz-Caseres admitted abducting a 25-year-old Kansas City woman because he was taking her to New Jersey to marry her. Problem is she didn't want to marry him.
That's how the woman ended up locked in a
Fairview Heights, Illinois, McDonald's bathroom to escape her captors.
Ortiz apparently wouldn't take no for an answer. He called the
woman, who he claimed he grew up with in a village in Mexico. He sent her letters. He even sent her an "engagement" ring in the
mail. Even when the woman told him that she had a boyfriend, he
wouldn't stop.
On Tuesday, Ortiz showed up at her door at 3701 Baltimore, threatening
to break it down if
she didn't let him in. Then he allegedly threw down an ultimatum: She
was
going with him whether she wanted to or not. She told him that she'd go
with him but changed her mind, went back to her apartment and locked the
door. Ortiz broke down the door and forced her into the van. Vasquez-Martinez admitted something seemed wrong with forcing a woman into a van and driving her across the country.

Vasquez-Martinez told police that Ortiz told him that he
needed a ride. He admitted the situation didn't seem right, but he
didn't do anything to stop it.
The
woman told police that she banged on the van's windows to draw
attention from others on the highway, but Ortiz would restrain her in a
"bear hug."
The van stopped at a McDonald's in Illinois. The
woman, who didn't speak
English, went into bathroom, locked the door and called her sister,
asking for help. The restaurant's manager ended up unlocking the
bathroom door, finding
the victim and calling police.
Ortiz and Vasquez were arrested at the McDonald's. They have been
charged
with felony kidnapping, and they are each being held on $150,000
bond.
