The annual Pembroke Hill High School's Clothesline Sale is great to hit up for reasonable, gently used, name-brand apparel, knickknacks and furniture. This year, I dropped $40 on couture skirts and dresses that I never could have afforded new, on a journalist's salary. Even secondhand, I couldn't afford the cutie to the right.

That life-sized baby giraffe was marked at $875 -- a big wad that would benefit the Pembroke Hill School Parents Association. He hadn't sold by the time I got to the sale on Saturday, the second day, at about the time that lots of items started going for half-price.

If Baby G hadn't been taller than me, I might have considered stuffing him under my coat. He was made by Steiff, the fancy, German toymakers, whose yellow tags my antiques-dealing grandma taught me to look out for at flea markets and thrift stores. And that means Baby G was probably worth every penny of his price tag.
