BTK 'murderabilia' still selling strong

Memorabilia of Dennis Rader, aka BTK, is considered rare.
Somewhere out there, right now, someone is contemplating buying dirt from Dennis Rader's former lawn for $40.

In a depressing story, Wichita Eagle writer Hurst Laviana has detailed that scraps of Rader's life are now going for up to $3,000 on serial killer, "murderabilia," Web sites. Radar is more commonly known as the BTK serial killer, convicted of killing 10 people over the course of three decades.

Aside from "guaranteed authentic dirt," sites like Serial Killer Central facilitate auctions for items like a handmade Halloween card or, if you really want to throw down the cash, a manilla envelope with Rader's rendering of the "Factor X creature that made him kill" for $2,999.

Most of what's being sold seems to be collected from Rader's 2005 stay in the Sedgwick County jail. More recent items that have made their way into collectors' hands include Rader's writings, like his thoughts on the 2009 election of Barack Obama.

Prison officials say Rader isn't the one profiting. In almost all cases, he's not even aware that anyone is selling an envelope he may have haphazardly scribbled on during his trial. But since there's relatively few pieces of "authentic" BTK merchandise, it's good money for anyone who wants to serve the online marketplace of homicide enthusiasts. Yes, there are people in this world who covet an autographed Charles Manson arrest warrant the same way the rest of us might want a baseball signed by Babe Ruth.

I go to sites like this sometimes. Who cares? They aren't killing anyone. We just have icky hobbies.

I don't really see the problem. If people want this stuff let them buy it.

Why would anyone really want to buy dirt from a family killers yard? That's just wrong in so many ways.....
