Zombies are the working class of the monster world. Plentiful, cheap, and overworked. Which is partly why zombies remain useful to low-budget horror filmmakers everywhere.

Today, a new zombie Web series filmed in Kansas City and St. Joseph posts its first episode at www.dead-wait.com. The story follows a shut-in paranoid, who has spent years preparing for the fall of civilization, but neglected to prepare for the dead rising from the grave. Fans of local theater will spot a lot of regulars (including Vanessa Severo, who this publication named Best Kansas City Actress in 2009) fending off the bloodthirsty horde.

Based on the Web site's description of the project, the makers are more interested in the sprawling examination of societal breakdown (The Walking Dead) than the terror of the inevitable that comes with a bunch of strangers barricaded against a sea of reanimated corpses (Night of the Living Dead). Zombies have proved to be adept at serving as blank slates perfect for all sorts of social commentary, and there's no reason that can't work again here.

Here's a taste of the carnage to come.
