Christine Downs: Mom of the Year

Let's see, what games do 14-year-old girls play at birthday parties? Ouija board? Too occult. Twister? Too grope-y.

I know
, thought 44-year-old Karen Christine Downs. We'll play Who Can Chug This Glass of Vodka the Fastest for Ten Dollars!

That brilliant plan, dreamed up in February 2009 at her daughter's birthday party, caused two teenage girls to be hospitalized and will likely cost Downs shock jail time and up to five years' probation, according to Platte County prosecutor Eric Zahnd.

Downs pleaded guilty to felony child endangerment yesterday.

Kansas City police responded to Downs' home at 1615 NW 55th Terrace at

2 a.m. on February 22, 2009, and found 60 to 70 empty beer bottles and

several bottles of bourbon, vodka and whiskey scattered throughout the

basement. Six girls, all between 13 and 14 years of age, admitted

they'd been drinking. One girl said she'd drank a beer and nine or 10

shots of vodka. Two girls were taken to the hospital for alcohol

poisoning. One was unconscious; her blood alcohol content was later

determined to be .218 (unofficially known as "Chris Farley level").

The girls told officers that Downs offered them shots of vodka if they didn't tell their parents. When they ran out of alcohol, Downs and another woman, Kelsee Guest, asked the girls to pony up for more and went on a liquor run. Guest has also been charged with felony child endangerment and is scheduled to be in court October 25.

Downs' sentencing is scheduled for July 8. Zahnd, who personally prosecuted the case, says he'll ask for a sentence of the maxiumum shock jail time and five years of probation, "so her daughter will be as close to 21 as possible before her mother is allowed to posess alcohol."

How did that turn out for her?  Sure I drank when I was in college, but if my parents would have caught me they would have kicked my ass.  Buying booze for other people's kids is not being a cool mom, it isn't even being a parent.  Parents are supposed to protect their kids, not send them to the hospital.

It was a mistake and she is paying for that mistake.  I don't know that you are doing the family name and favors by dropping f bombs and insulting people.  Maybe admit it was a mistake, don't make excuses, and lay low for a bit.  She is being taught a tough lesson that she unfortunately did not know prior to some kids ending up in the hospital.

A few drinks I can understand and allowing your own kids to have them, fine. But 60 bottles of beer plus a half a dozen bottles of hard liquor for only 6 teenage girls? What did she think was going to happen? She definately wasn't acting responsible for someone else's children.

wow. I'm sure she was just trying to be a "cool" mom, but this isn't the way to do it. Kids have immature systems and those kids could have DIED so she could look cool to her daughter and her friends. The comment by Brad says momentary lapse in judgement. It's worse than a momentary lapse, she was downright stupid. BUT. I don't think she did this with any real intention of harming children. I don't think she should get jail time but I do think she should do community service in an area that enables her to see the negative outcome of teenage drinking. Victim impact panels over videos that show wrecks and/or hospitalized teens, teens who lose lives, friends ,arms and legs as a result of drinking. Maybe it will help her to realize what is cool is life. Drinking doesn't make a good time and I'm sure mom realizes her mistake now.

mariah and pibblyboo go "F" yourselves.
it was a stupid mistake, not premeditated murder. get off your high horse, robbing the women of her children forever only makes things worse. You must get off on destroying families, let the woman figure out her own problems, you are both "see you en tee's"

Holy cow, that's a lot of booze for anybody, let alone teenage girls. That's more than just "a hangover", that's violently sick. 9-10 shots of vodka and a beer would normally get me pretty drunk, and I'm a ~6ft, 240lb man.

That sounds like a lot of liquor for 6-7 full grown males, let alone 6-7 teenage girls!

And why is anyone 'shocked' at this sentence? This stupid mother is lucky that no one died!

What idiots come up with these comments? "No contact with kids ever again"?!? WTF? The damn kids just got a hangover...you sleep it off and you're better the next day. Preventing a mother from having any contact with her own daughter is only going to screw the daughter up royally.

thats a little harsh...sure feeding your teenage daughter and her friends booze isnt the smartest thing, but she obviously didnt want anyone to be hospitalized. The mother clearly was just trying to be a 'fun' mom and had a momentary lapse of judgement. Im sure whatever jail time and probabtion is more than enough to ensure the mother never does anything like this again. Cut her a little slack, sheesh.

I personally know her and her daughter and son. They aren't the most stable family, but they aren't criminals. The daughter and her friends are stupid sluts so they deserve to have her mother taken away, which was probably her source of inspiration in the first place.

What on earth made these women think this was a good idea. Not only jail time and a fine, but NO contact with any kids ever again, including their own children.
