Update (12:58 p.m. May 24): Sounds like retired NBA player and Olathe resident Manute Bol is doing better.
The 7-foot-7 center was hospitalized May 12 with acute kidney failure and Stevens-Johnson
Syndrome (a potentially deadly skin disease).
Bol's friend, Tom Prichard, sent a Facebook message saying Bol has been transferred out of the intensive care unit and has started eating a little.
"Thanks be to God that he made it to the US just in time to get much-needed medical care," Prichard wrote. "Many thanks to everyone for your prayers and beautiful messages."
Bol is in rough shape in a Virginia hospital.

Original story (6 a.m. May 19): Retired NBA player Manute
Bol has been hospitalized with acute kidney failure and Stevens-Johnson
Syndrome (a potentially deadly skin disease) in a critical care
unit in northern Virgina since May 12.
A "get
well soon" Facebook page dedicated to Bol says the former 7-foot-7
center "was so determined to help with the election in Sudan, he
postponed
needed medical care."
That led to trouble upon Bol's return
stateside. Bol flew into Dulles International Airport and stayed the
night. He was supposed to fly back to Kansas, but Bol had to be rushed
to a hospital.
Bol's friend Tom Prichard told The
Washington Post that Bol had undergone two rounds of dialysis
and may have to be placed in a burn unit for the Stevens-Johnson
Syndrome.
"He's at great risk," Prichard told the Post. "He's in a bad
way."
Bol is on morphine to treat the pain. The Facebook page wishing Bol well
says his blood levels are improving. Check this
site for updates on his condition.
Bol's Sudan Sunrise
foundation is based in Lenexa, Kansas.
