Mean Melin is Las Vegas' air guitar champion. Next up, the U.S.? (updated)

Update (7:41 a.m. June 2): Kansas City air guitar champ Eric "Mean" Melin slayed Las Vegas Friday night, qualifying for the U.S. Air Guitar Championships in New York City next month. Melin's one-minute, sweat-soaked metal meltdown to Slayer's "Angel of Death" is now on YouTube. Beware: There are naughty words (it wouldn't be metal without 'em).

Original story (8:30 a.m. June 1): Eric "Mean" Melin let his air guitar dreams ride in Las Vegas Friday night, and he finally hit the jackpot.

Melin won the Las Vegas regional competition by the slimmest of margins, edging The Fro 46.3 to 46.2 at one of Vegas' Hard Rock Cafes. Melin apparently also toppled WEC cage fighter Miguel Angel Torres, known in U.S. Air Guitar as Thor the Mexican, and what looks to be a dude with a sock over his wang (you've been warned).

Melin's ticket is finally punched for the U.S. Air Guitar Championships in New York City on July 22. Vegas was his final stand for 2010.

In April, Melin hit the road for a five-city

air guitar tour, but despite strong showings (finishing in second

place twice and third three times), he didn't qualify for the

championships.
