Jackson County Circuit Court prosecutors are charging Hayes with one felony count of knowingly burning. A witness reported seeing Hayes with the vehicle shortly before it ignited.
The Hooker brothers were reported missing by their mother on May 26 -- one day before their remains were found at 4501 Askew, wrapped in trash bags and duct taped and left in a shopping cart.
According to police reports, on May 25 of this year, the Kansas City Police Department and Kansas City Fire Department were called to 5406 East 55th Street, where they found a 1997 Mercury Sable that was on fire. The car's license plate and Vehicle Identification Number showed Joseph Hooker as the owner.
A witness told police they'd seen the victims drive the Mercury to 4511 Monroe, and identified Lonell Hayes as the man last seen driving the car. The witness told police Hayes drove the car to 55th and Hardy, lingered in the vehicle alone, then ran out of the Mercury as it began to smoke.
Hayes was arrested on June 2. Under police questioning, he denied any involvement in the homicides or burning the car. He told police that he had reported his .45-caliber pistol stolen on May 27, though he had recently purchased trash bags. When asked about a burn on his leg, Hayes told police he'd spilled gasoline on it while mowing the lawn, then accidently set his leg on fire while lighting a cigarette.
Lonell Hayes is being held on a $10,000 cash-only bond and has not been charged with the homicides. Brother Loyal Hayes is being held on $1 million bond and has been charged with two counts of murder and two counts of armed criminal action.

@Kia Zi, what u just said is not true, I dont know any of these young men, but my children's father is exactly what you said, he's no good, been in prison and pretty soon he will be on his way back! For you to sit here and talk smack on their babies mother is not right! Yes a woman with children who's father is not in their life can actually do something w/o any of the freebies the state offer. I make $12.50 per hr, I pay for my childrens medical insurance n the Dr's copay as well. I don't get welfare or food stamps, as for childcare I pay out of my own pocket for someone to look watch them after school! And No my son and daughter will not take after their father, thats b/c they have a mother that can support them and give them everything they need, and guess what I can do this all w/o a father figure in the home!There are many woman in my same position that can and does the same, so before you sit here and prejudge someone on what you THINK you know, well just don't do it!
What has happened here is a tragedy, you must honestly have no life to try and belittle any of these people, there are famliles here that lost someone they love no matter what has taken place, the only one's that are truly hurt will be the children!

None of these young people act in an appropriate manner that would indicate that they are good people. They rob and kill their neighbors, they have illegitimate babies that they can't suport and they end up in prison for life. Their babies mamas lie about not being on welfare. Anyone with half a brain knows you can't give birth, feed,cloth, give medical care or house a child off twelve dollars an hour without the aid of free prenatal care, free birthing services at the hospital, free after care, free food, free clothes, free housing and all the other freebies the state passes out to children who don't have a working father in the home. It sends the wrong message to little kids about what being good is. When the kids grow up to be the same kind of good as their parents and end up doing life with no parole, they don't understand why because after all, they've been good people.

This entire story is so sad, it just breaks my heart that 2 people can be so stupid n selfish, that they had 2 take another person's ( 2 ppl ) life!
