Last month, C.J. Janovy announced that she was leaving The Pitch. So who's taking over?
This morning, Joe Tone was named the new editor of The Pitch, and he sounds pretty excited to be coming to 17th and Main.
"I'm just thrilled about getting to Kansas City and getting to work," Tone writes in an e-mail. "The
city is obviously brimming with great stories, and The Pitch newsroom
is well armed to tell them. Filling those ass-kicking boots of CJ's is
going to be no small feat, but I'm looking forward to
trying."
And here's the official word from the big boss man.
Joe Tone is the new editor of The Pitch, Village Voice Media Holdings announced today.
He will replace C.J. Janovy, who is leaving the paper
later this month to become director of communications at the University
of Kansas Medical Center.
Tone will move to Kansas City from Denver, where he has been working as
the Web Editor for VVM's Westword. Previously, Tone was the
managing editor at Cleveland Scene under VVM ownership. He came
to the company as a staff writer in Cleveland in 2004 from a reporting
job at the Stockton Record.
Tone, 31, is a graduate of Santa Clara University. He later received a
master's degree in journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at
Northwestern University.
"I don't envy anyone who has to try and fill C.J.'s shoes," says
Andy Van De Voorde, VVM's executive associate editor. "But Joe
is a pro, as well as a reporter and editor whose work has been
characterized by innovation and creative energy. His experience both on
the Web and in print will be invaluable, and I know he'll bring both a
steady hand and a great personal commitment to The Pitch."
A formal start date for Tone will be announced shortly.

I personally would not want to fight my new boss. It's just my fists - or Jack Johnson and Tim O'Leary as I like to call them - well those boys have been drinking all day.....
He's got huge, huge shoes to fill but I think he's going to do a great job.
