With mainstream newspapers and local television stations working with fewer resources, some stories are going to fall through the cracks. Luckily, there are people like John O'Hara picking up the slack.

This May, O'Hara's DIY News project started posting the first in a series of videos reporting on metro events that local anchors might ignore. Something like this could easily come off as amateurish and silly, but the videos are edited well, and O'Hara has a presence in front of the camera that's at least as straightforward and charismatic as your average television news reporter on the scene, which translates well to different subjects, be it the need for volunteers at Old Shawnee Days or retiring teachers.

You can follow DIY News' stories on Facebook. Here's O'hara reporting on dead cow removal in Lenexa.
