Kevin Kietzman, the popular sports radio host, made a splash when he reported in May that the Big Ten wanted Missouri, Nebraska and Notre Dame to join the conference.
The Big Ten's interest in expansion had been in the news for months. Kietzman, who hosts a show on 810-WHB, advanced the story by stating that the Big Ten had "extended initial offers." ESPN and several newspapers across the U.S. picked up on Kietzman's scoop, which was posted at 810whb.com.
However, the story is developing differently than Kietzman's sources
said it would. While Nebraska
officials will consider a move to the Big Ten today, Missouri
remains a member of the disintegrating Big 12.
Warren Erdman, a University of Missouri curator who lives in Kansas City, said Thursday the Big Ten had not invited the Tigers to join the conference.
With no immediate offers, Mizzou could be scrambling to find a new home, a scenario that Kansas and Kansas State have been contemplating since word came that the Pac-10 might want to pick off Big 12 teams. (Colorado said it was joining the Pac-10 on Thursday.)

No, actually some excellent reporting by Kietzman and the rest of the crew at 810 Radio. Mizzu plays Illinois to start the football season every year. The past years, Mizzu has kicked Big 10 butt. The Mizzu/Illini game was the genesis of this major story.
The truth is somewhere between Mizzu getting a legit offer, and wanting more mulloh from the Big 12.
Even though I find this sick, to keep up with the big boyz in any higher level NCAA comp. millions in dollar bills has to feed the system. Mizzu/KU/K-State/Iowa State have to spend like the big dogs, no other choice.
Due to the odd Big 12 start-up schools like Mizzu do not come close to shared conference monies. Northwestern little sister in the Big 12 pulls in more money for football than a very visible Mizzu program.
Kietzman could still be right 100%, but he was on this story like a dog on bacon.
So far,
Mizzu hasn't even gotten a good bye smooch, but boy howdy did they get @@cked.
It's obvious in hindsight that he made the whole thing up, and he won't cop to it. He's done this before, but not this egregiously.
