Newsweek has come up with a list of America's best public high schools.
The results run contrary to a half-century of migratory patterns. The area's two highest ranking buildings are located in Kansas City, Missouri, and Kansas City, Kansas.
Rated No. 72 on Newsweek's list, Lincoln College Prep in Kansas
City, Missouri, was the only school in the metro to finish in the top
200. Sumner Academy of Arts & Science in KCK came in at No. 246,
miles ahead of the closest Kansas-side competitor (Blue Valley
Northwest, No. 650).
Newsweek bases its list on "how hard school staffs work to challenge students with advanced-placement college-level courses and tests." A more detailed explanation is available here.
An important fact to keep in mind is that Lincoln College Prep and Sumner Academy get a say in who gets to attend. Students apply to attend each institution, a process that eliminates a lot of low-achieving riff raff.
Still, in a year when the Kansas City, Missouri, School District, made national news for drastically reducing its number of school buildings, Lincoln College Prep's rating is reason to celebrate.
