What's with the mass exodus of staffers from KCFreePress.com, the upstart online news magazine launched at the start of the year by Jeff Henry? A look into Henry's court records may offer a clue.
Henry, who owns BIGSHOT Media, has been sued four times since 2004 by Missouri's Division of Employment Security and ordered to pay a total of $5,560.46. It appears that he owes $8,659.19 in delinquent taxes to the Department of Revenue.
Emily Farris, a founding editor of the site, had only just recently announced her promotion to the editor-in-chief position. On Sunday, she Tweeted about her departure.
Staff writer Lucas Wetzel clocked out for good around the same time. When KCFreePress launched at the start of 2010, Wetzel had been pretty excited about its prospects. Luke's wife and the site's photography editor, Jennifer Wetzel, is on the outs, as is Jay Senter, formerly KCFreePress' executive editor.
Insiders say that KCFreePress' staffers have been upset over delayed paychecks and the general disorganization of the business.
David LaCrone, the author of KClunchspots.com and a KCFreePress contributer, tells us via e-mail that he's sticking around. "I'm going to continue to write since I have never had any significant problems
getting paid," he writes. "I think he [Henry] is in the process of gauging all the writers' interests
in continuing to write for the site, then setting up a more sustainable model
for paying people."
